SIR,

WHEN I ventured to solicit YOUR MAJESTY'S permission to lay this Book at YOUR feet, I considered that the end of my Father's literary labours was to promote the cause of truth and the moral interests of man

to the protection of a MONARCH, whose life and reign have been an uniform practice of Religion and Virtue.

TO YOUR MAJESTY Europe is indebted for whatever is still preserved to it of social order and legitimate Government: and we, SIR, who having the happiness to be YOUR MAJESTY'S Subjects, remain in the unimpaired enjoyment of our Religion, Liberties, and Laws, must feel that these inestimable blessings have, under Providence, been hitherto secured to us by YOUR MAJESTY's great and good example, and by the wisdom, steadiness,
