[Excessively rare. George Steevens' copy, with his autograph on the title-page. In the first edition of this book occurs the first mention of Shakespeare. The excessive rarity of the earlier editions of the book is shown by Sir Sidney Lee's article in the Dictionary of National Biography, where it is stated that the only known copies are First Edition, 1594, two perfect copies, and one imperfect; Second and Third Editions, none at all; Fourth Edition, one copy; and Fifth Edition, one in the British Museum, then believed to be unique. That copy,

however, is imperfect. The Fourth Edition above referred to is an issue of 1605, and Lee further states that the issue of 1609 was probably a remainder of this Fourth Edition.] Willughby (F.)
