PREFACE.

THIS little work has been drawn up for the use of candidates preparing for the Civil Service and the University Local Examinations, and for the middle and upper forms in schools.

It consists of 170 interesting and instructive passages from our best authors, progressively arranged, and designed to serve as materials for practice in English Spelling.

It is intended that each lesson should be diligently conned by the pupil at home, then transcribed, and lastly, written out from dictation.

The practice of transcription will be found especially valuable for young boys.

Most of the words likely to be misspelt are printed in italics, and the pupil's particular attention is directed to them.
