KNICKERBOCKER MAGAZINE, or New York Monthly Magazine, 1832-58,52 vols. Continued monthly. (The early volumes are scarce.) The Knickerbocker was established in 1832 by C. J. Hoffman, the novelist; his successor was Timothy Flint; and the present editor is Louis Gaylord Clarke. The Knickerbocker has been one of the most brilliant periodicals of the United States, It counted among its contributors Washington Irving, Paulding, Wm. Ware, Bryant, and Longfellow. Almost all the writers who during the last twenty years have achieved a reputation in the United States, commenced their literary career either as critics or novel writers

in its columns.
