It

may be proper to state that the Author of the following Discourses delivered them in support of an appeal which was made to build a Territorial Church in one of the dark and destitute districts of Edinburgh. He has committed them to the press in the hope that, with the divine blessing, they may help to turn public attention more intently on some of our social evils, and rouse Christians to those vigorous and selfdenying efforts, which the glory of God, the good of souls, and the welfare of the country urgently demand.
