THE work here offered to the reader was first printed about fifty years ago. It is now republished in a revised and enlarged form. The example of a person like Mr. WILLIAM STEVENS appears to have some special claims to remembrance. He was trained to a mercantile life, and had ample opportunities of becoming rich; but he was content with a moderate competency, and bestowed the greater part of his income on works of Piety and Charity. He also found leisure for literary pursuits, particularly for the study of Theology and ChurchGovernment; and he lived in habits of friendly intercourse with some of the most pious and learned men of his time: and defended by his writings the doctrine and discipline of the Church of England, which he illustrated and adorned by his example. |
