A young lady in the neighbourhood of Wisbech, juft married, upon fome harfh ufage from her husband, determined to put an end to her life, and gave notice of her defign to several of her acquaintance, who looked upon her declarations as idle prattle; but on the 29th, after chearfully fpending the evening at cards, fhe took a folemn leave of fome of the company, and this morning, her hufband being gone down ftairs, the rofe from her bed, dreffed herself in part, and with a gun which the had found means to conceal in the room fhot herself thro' the head. The coroner's jury have brought in their verdi& lunacy.

Fri. Nov. 1. The judgment obtained by Dryden Leach, against the King's meffengers (Jeep.755 in 1763) was affirmed by the unanimous opinion of the court of King's-Bench. This deciffion is final, and the first that has been determined. A huffar belonging to his R. H. the Duke of Cumberland, having begged a fuit of his late mafters cloaths to put himself in mourning, had his requett granted. But when he was deliver ing them to the taylor to have them altered, he discovered a private pocket, in which he found a small morocco leather cafe in which was bank-notes to the amount of 17511. which he honeftly returned.

Wed. 6. The Calcutta Indiaman from Bombay, arrived in the river. Her cargo confifts among other things of 31,389 pieces of goods of various forts, 1600lb. of cotton yarn, 374,000lb. of pepper, 67,500lb. of red-wood, and 600,400lb. of faltpetre,

Wed. 20. The Rt Hon. Lord Adam Gordon, who is lately arrived from America, and who has been requested by the heads of the colonies to make a true report of their diftreffes, had a long confe rence with his majesty's fecretaries of ftate, when it is fuppofed his lordship_impartially executed his commiffion. It is confidently afferted, that if the new stamp act is ever carried into execution in that continent, it must be by military collectors; for no perfons in civil employ will dare to undertake it.

Thurf. 21. A perfon was fummoned before the fitting Alderman, for attending Mafs, contrary to law, and was obliged to enter into a recognizance of 400l. for his appearance at the enfuing feffions of the peace. The increase of Popery in this metropolis is very alarming. The licenfed priests of that communion in England, are only 63, for the chappels of foreign ambaffadors; all the reft are fubject to fevere penalties.

Mary Cockburn was committed to Newcaftle goal, for a fpecies of forgery, very artfully contrived. Under various pre tences, the got fome perfons to draw up the forms of promiffary notes, and draughts, and when she had fo done, the got other perfons by folding down the writing to fet their names to them Thefe fhe negociated, and raised large fums of money.

Wed. 27. A violent fhock like that of an earthquake happened at Long Benton, within four miles of Newcastle, which disjointed all the houses in that town, being built of ftone, upon a freeftone rock; the inhabitants filed from

their houfes into the fields and streets, expecting their fall every minute; the ftreet opened and clofed again from end to end the fields and a gentleman's garden funk above two feet, and many parts of the great Killingworth moor 'fhared the fame fate, but no lives were loft, This was occafioned by the noted colliery of Long Benton having been compleatly wrought out. It is a cultom in working collieries, to leave as much coal as they dig away; but being a coal of great character in London, they worked the coal pillars away, and fixed wood ones in their ftead, which not being able to fupport a rock of two miles fquare, and feventyfive fathoms thick, being the depth of the coal pit, the whole funk down together.

Fri. 19. King, Rogers and Matthews, three of the defperate villains who lately made their efcape from Maidstone gaol, after killing the keeper, were executed at Maidstone. (See p. 508.)

Sat. 30. Poor Rouffeau is at length driven from Geneva, where he thought himself safe, and is gone to take refuge under the protection of the K. of Pruffia, but in fuch a deplorable ftate of health that his life is doubtful.

In Lapland 120 head of rein-deer were ftruck dead by one flash of lightening, on the 23d of July laft. The poor beafts, about a quarter of an hour before, had all got together as under apprehenfions

Dec. 4 Mr. Harrison received 7,500l. in confequence of his certificate from the board of longitude, (See p. 698.)- By this payment the nation has now expended the fum of 16,500l. in confequence of feveral acts of parliament for difcovery of the longitude at fea, It is asked, therefore, what advantage is likely to be reaped by this invention, fince the commiffioners of longitude have thought proper to lock up the time keeper in a box in the admiralty-office ?

At a numerous meeting of merchants trading to North America, Mr. Alderman Trecathic being unanimously voted to the hair, a committee was appointed(confift

ing of principal merchants trading to each colony) to folicit fome effectual remedy in the prefent diftreffed state of the trade to the colonies, fo effentially neceffary for the fupport of the manufactories of this kingdom.-A deputation from this committee waited on the miniftry to requeft their countenance and fupport in their intended application to parliament, and, it is faid, met with great encouragement.

At the fociety of arts, the relation of an improvement in the art of dying was made by a member.-A German, now in England, propofes to make a discovery to the fociety of a certain transparent liquor, which will dye filk, &c. either of a most beautiful purple, or crimson, in grain, without the affiftance of cochyneal or indigo. The perfection of colour which this dye produces, is faid to exceed any thing hitherto obtained of the kind; the expenfe of the process next to nothing; the compofition made from a common English weed; and the strength of colour fuch as to refift the fun's rays, and even not to be discharged by boiling lemonjuice.

Fri. 13. Mr. James Gibson, an attorney, charged with counterfeiting two in-. ftruments, in form of writings made by the clerk of the Report-Office, of the highcourt of chancery, with intent to defraud William Hunt, gentleman, of the fum of 9051. 45. 7d. for which he was committed to Newgate.

Sat. 14. Orders were read to all the regiments of foot guards, and troops of horfe, acquainting them, that if lawfully married, their wives would be admitted into the Lying-in Hofpital, and their children taken proper care of.

Mon. 16. The feffions ended at the

Old-Bailey, when ten convicts received fentence of death; James Wilkins and Wm. Scott for robbing Ambrofe Dennis near Pancras ; Edw. Benfon and John Aldridge for house breaking; Mary Pyner for robbing her mafter; Stephen Wheat and Robert Tull for stealing goods on the river; Thomas Reynolds for the highway; John Jones for forgery at a former feffions; and Elizabeth Dunn for the like crime.

The Hon. Commiffioners of his Majesty's victualling office, contracted with Mr. Melli for 600 oxen, at 28 fhillings and three pence per hundred weight.

At fix in the morning died at Fontainbleau, Louis, Dauphin of France, in the 37th year of his age.

Sat. 21. The Court of Directors of the Bank of England gave notice that they have made an agreement with the Rt. Hon. the Lords commiffioners of his majefty's treasury, to circulate Exchequer bills, made forth for one year, to end the 5th of August 1766.

Sun. 22.

A moft fhocking murder was committed on the body of Mr. Farley, a young gentleman who had lodgings at the house of one Street, a tobacconist, near Westminster Bridge; this old villain having a quarrel with his maid, took up a knife to cut her throat, which fo frighted the girl that she cried murder with fuch violence that the young gentleman ftarted from his bed, and ran down to prevent it; when Street in his rage ript up his belly, and he died on the spot. He then made an attempt upon himself, but the wound is not mortal. He was immediately feized and committed to gaol.

Wed. 26. His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, and his Serene Highnefs the hereditary prince of Brunswick, and the Rt. Hon. the Earl of Albemarle, were invested by his majefty with the

moft noble Order of the Garter.

Sun. 29. At half after three in the afternoon, died in Leicester-fields, his R. H. Prince Frederick William, his Majefty's youngest brother, in the 16th year of his age, on which melancholy occasion, all public diverfions are fufpended.

Tuef. 31. A forged draught under the fignature of Sir Joshua Van Neck and Co. for 4500l. payable to the Hon. Thomas Walpole Efq; lately pafled at the Bank, and what is remarkable, the notes for which the faid draught was first exchanged were all brought to the Bank, and the cash received for them, before the faid forgery was difcovered. Five hundred pounds reward is offered by the Bank for the discovery of the forger, or his accomplice.

The celebrated M. Rouffeau, is now fettled at Berlin in a weak condition. His majesty received him with great marks of tenderness and affection, affuring him of his protection against the effects of the intemperate zeal of the bigots either of popery or puritanism.

A Benedictine hath publish'd a pam. phlet, which is in pretty good esteem at Paris, against the works of Rousseau; in which he proves that Rouffeau, who boasts of writing from his own ideas only, is not the original he afferts himself to be.

The King of Sardinia's Minifter has been with Mr. Harrison, to let him know, that his Mafter will order four of his watches to be made by him at 1000l. each, as an acknowledgment of Mr. Harrison's ingenuity, and as fome recompence for the time he has spent for the general good of mankind.

There are at prefent in the city of York, a boy and a girl of furprizing fize. They are twins; and though not yet 17 years of age, the brother measures seven feet 3 inches, and the fifter measures seven feet two.

The French ftill continue to buy up our fwift going fhips; and there is one of them now in the river, loaden with cannon and other military ftores, which, it is faid, is bound to one of their colonies.

Schemes for making navigable canals between Hull and Liverpoole, and between Wildon ferry and Fordsham-bridge in Cheshire, are in agitation, and, it is hoped, will be put in execution; as that of the Duke of Bridgewater's fhews them to be practicable. Other fchemes of the like kind are much talked of.
