3.

When howling winds, and beating rain,
In tempests shake the sylvan cell,
Or 'midst the chace on every plain,

The tender thought on thee shall dwell.

4.

Each lonely scene shall thee restore,
For thee the tear be duly shed,
Beloved, till life can charm no more,
And mourned, till pity's self be dead.

Te domi, gelidis simul
Caurus saeviet imbribus,

Vel procella ruet, truci
Debacchata furore;

Te campis jaculo lupam

Sternens, indomitumve aprum,

Te desiderio gravi

Moerens usque requiram.

Has inter lacrymas mihi
Saepe, per juga montium,

Vallesque irriguas, tui

Vana surget imago.
Nunc, dilecte puer, vale!

Fidis care sodalibus

Donec vita supersit, atque
Ipsa in morte dolende!

MILTON.

CAPTAIN, or Colonel, or Knight in arms,

Whose chance on these defenceless doors may seize, If deed of honour did thee ever please,

Guard them, and him within protect from harms.

He can requite thee, for he knows the charms
That call fame on such gentle acts as these,
And he can spread thy name o'er lands and seas,
Whatever clime the sun's bright circle warms.
Lift not thy spear against the Muses bower!
The great Emathian conqueror bad

spare

The house of Pindarus when temple and tower
Went to the ground, and the repeated air

Of sad Electra's poet had the power

To save the Athenian walls from ruin bare.

POETA

AD URBIS OPPUGNATORES.

DUX! miles! quicunque feri in certamine Martis

Has indefensas veneris ante fores,

Parce precor! vatemque infestis protege ab armis,
Si quis Musarum est, si pietatis honos.
Ille potens magicae, qua fama accenditur, artis,
Serta dabit capiti non peritura tuo;

Ille tibi extremis nomen clarabit in oris,

Sole quot occiduo, quotve oriente calent. Pieridum haec sedes; Belli furor impius absit! Thebarum Emathius victor in excidio,

Diruta tecta inter, turresque, et templa Deorum, Pindaricam intactam stare domum voluit; Carminibusque sacris sacras servavit Athenas Flebilis Electrae tibia docta modos.
