XXXII.

INFANS.

DUM tibi vix nato laeti risere parentes,

XXXIII.

ARIOSTO.

Quando felice in su la rota siede;

Volta la turba adulatrice il piede ;

XXXIII.

THE FRIEND.

NONE ever learnt 'midst fortune's smiles

The undissembling heart to know;
When faith sincere, and flattery's wiles,

Alike in outward seeming show.

"Tis when her giddy wheel goes round,

Scattering aloof the servile train,

That friends are proved, and faithful found,

And even in death unchanged remain.

XXXIV.

COLLINS.

To fair Fidele's grassy tomb

1.

Soft maids and village hinds shall bring Each opening sweet of earliest bloom,

And rifle all the breathing spring.

2.

No wailing ghost shall dare appear,
To vex with shrieks this quiet grove;
But shepherd lads assemble here,
And melting virgins own their love.

XXXIV.

HYLAS.

1.

HUC, misellus Hylas ubi
Molli in cespite conditur,
Vos flentes pueri rosis
Mixta lilia, flentes

Vos adferte puellulae

Ruris primitias breves,
Quot ver spirat odoribus,

Quos dat Flora colores.

2.

At Larvae procul, horridique Absistent Lemures, neque huic

Luco dulce silentium

Rumpent dira querentes :

Sed canet bene mutuis

Pastor laetus amoribus,

Sed puella fatebitur

Queis aduritur ignes.
