RICHARD BURBAGE, from the original Painting in the
Gallery at Dulwich.

VIII : b

NOTE ON THE FRONTISPIECE

Richard Burbage, actor, the lifelong friend of Shakespeare, created the title part of Hamlet and many of the leading parts of Shakespeare's tragedies. The portrait here reproduced, which now hangs in the Dulwich Gallery, is ascribed to the actor himself, who is also credited by Oldys with the 'Chandos' portrait of Shakespeare, of which a reproduction is given as

frontispiece to Volume II. of this edition.
