**DECEMBER. *

TURQUOISE: PROSPERITY.

WITH What a glory comes and goes the year!
The buds of spring, those beautiful harbingers
Of sunny skies and cloudless times, enjoy
Life's newness, and earth's garniture spread out.
And when the silver habit of the clouds
Comes down upon the autumn sun, and with
A sober gladness the old year takes up
His bright inheritance of golden fruits,
A pomp and pageant fill the splendid scene.

O what a glory doth this world put on
For him who, with a fervent heart, goes forth
Under the bright and glorious sky, and looks
On duties well performed, and days well spent!
For him the wind, ay, and the yellow leaves,
Shall have a voice, and give him eloquent teachings.
He shall so hear the solemn hymn, that Death
Has lifted up for all, that he shall go

To his long resting-place without a tear.

LONGFELLOW.

Live long-the shadow of no grief
Come ever near to thee;

As thou in height of place art chief,

So chief in gladness be.

R. C. TRENCH.

Choose the best kind of life, and practice will make it the most pleasant.

PYTHAGORAS.

All her words and actions mixed with love
And sweet compliance, which declare unfeigned
Union of mind, or in us both one soul,
Harmony to behold in wedded pair,

More grateful than harmonious sound to the ear.

MILTON.

Once again we may meet, never, NEVER to be separated; all through the days of eternity together united, one with another, in endless union round the throne of God. H. G. M.

If you true happiness prefer,
'Tis to no rank of life confined,
But dwells in every honest mind.
Be justice then your sole pursuit,
Plant virtue, and content's the fruit.
Duties are ours, events are God's.

Each was to each a dearer self,

GAY.

CECIL.

Supremely happy with awakened power

Of giving joy.

THOMSON.

GRAINGER.

Shall not Hymen light his brightest torch
For this delighted pair?

All this put together is nothing as compared with the glory of that great Paradise. Oh how that place is lovely and to be desired! Oh! how glorious is that city!

S. FRANCIS DE SALES.
