According to the Priest (in Don Quixote) Amadis de Gaul was the first of the Romances of Chivalry in Spain, and as the father of so pernicious a sect deserved to be thrown into the flames, but was spared at the intercession of the Barber "as the best of all the books of this kind." Col. Stanley's copy sold for £50.
