The excellent and pious Doddridge received his first religious impressions from the Scripture subjects represented in the Dutch Tiles of his paternal fireside. All descriptions leave but a vague impression, while a picture becomes at once the channel of religious impression, subdues the evil, awakens the best affections of the heart. They arrest attention and excite curiosity.

Few have not heard of good effects produced by representations of most important acts in the life of our Saviour. To assist, by outward and visible images, minds but little accustomed to reflection; to find more ready access into their souls for the truths propounded to them; to excite in them sentiments of piety and feeling which move them to the practice of virtue, such are the effects produced by religious pictures. 1940 Sacriledge, Discourse of, the Just, Collation, Unjust Ablation of Rules, &c. of Clergie, 1641; Sempil, Sacriledge Sacredly Handled, according to Scripture onely, with Answer to Scaliger, Selden's Tithes, &c. for all Churches, especially of North Britaine, scarce, 1619, 2 works, 2s. 6d. 1828 1941 Sadler Varii PERFORATIONIS, Modi, Descripti, et Ennarati, 4to. 12 plates, with numerous instruments, ls. 2068 His Celebrated Piece, the Maid of Orleans,
TRANSLATED, with NOTES, Frontispiece by
Steinle, 1s.

nt. 4s.

"Unequalled for genius, and poetical brilliancy. Schiller has elaborated this piece with greatest nicety and care; he laboured at it with great zeal and delight,

until he arrived at its conclusion.'

"The delineation of the inspired' and courageous heroine may fairly rank among most beautiful of Schiller's conceptions. It abounds with single passages, which may be tested by highest standard of excellence."

"With what a stream of child-like innocence, for example, Jean d'Arc discloses her Apostleship to the startled yet attentive monarch; the Soliloquies of the Holy Maid' also, are Poetical chefs d'œuvre, of no ordinary kind."

Ditto, William Tell. 2069 TRANSLATED, Frontispiece by Tenniel, 18.

"In my judgment most excellent of all his dramatic works. Here Schiller has quite come back to his early vein, that of poetizing history. Tell, himself, is written with great natural diguity, and his wife Hedwig, and his son Walther especially, are portrayed admirably.

"

"The entire of first act, the third act, and scene where Tell shoots the apple, are most brilliant passages.' Schlegel.

"The best thing he ever wrote-there runs a kind of Melody through it. The Descriptions of Herdsman of the Alps are exquisite. It is a kind of Swiss thing itself."-Carlyle.
