Ascetic Devotion.

A certaine famous Doctour of ye Holye Catholick Churche (named Tanlerus) for eight yeares together earnestly importuned Almightye God, by denoute prayer to shew hym a man yt could teache hym ye waye of Truth and Perfection: at length as he was on his knies, ardentlye beseeching God to graunt hym this request, he hearde a voyce from Heauen speake to him in this manner. Goe to ye Church porche and there thou shall finde a man yt can teach thee ye way of Truthe. Going forthe he found there a poor Beggar, in ragged and sordid clothes scarce worth threehalfe-pence whome he saluted in this manner.
