SOTHEBY, WILKINSON & HODGE.

THE LIBRARY OF THE LATE G. H. STEPHENSON, OF PARIS. (No. of Lots, 398; amount realised, £1,915 6s.)

[NOTE. Nearly the whole of the books in this Library had been expensively rebound in modern ornamented morocco, russia or calf extra, and as a rule the prices realised were little or no criterion of the value of the books themselves. The result of rebinding books of this kind, regardless of cost, is nearly always a heavy loss, as was doubtless the case in this instance. Under the circumstances it has not been thought desirable or necessary to do more than select for report a few of the better books, inclusive of those which, in the Editor's opinion, suffered comparatively little from the process of rebinding, regard being had to the probable cost.-ED.]
