A PORTION OF THE COLLECTION OF MANUSCRIPTS (KNOWN AS THE APPENDIX") MADE BY THE LATE EARL OF ASH

[ocr errors]

BURNHAM.

It is advisable to notice the sale of this collection of Manuscripts, which was one of the most extensive, and certainly the most celebrated, which has been sold by auction for many years. The catalogue comprised 177 entries, and the prices realised seem, on the whole, to have been very high, though in one or two instances what were believed to be very important works went for a mere trifle. For instance, a manuscript described by the press as being "of exceptional interest to Englishmen "-Sir Philip Sidney's "Arcadia," dating from the 16th century, and comprising 283 folios, imperfect at the beginning-realised 12s. only, which was precisely the amount obtained for Hugh Percy's "A Book of Arithmetic," 16th century, folio, containing numerous diagrams drawn in red, blue, and green ink. "A Booke of Phisicke," written on 455 folios of paper in 1621, brought no more than 5s., notwithstanding the fact that it was crowded with curious old cookery and household recipes, and properly indexed. Such prices as these were, however, exceptional, though it is worthy of notice that volumes which were finally disposed of for large amounts were invariably started at sums which showed that neither the dealers nor anyone else who attended the sale had a definite idea of their worth, and preferred, consequently, to test the value by outbidding one another a pound, or in some cases a few shillings, at a time. Manuscripts, being in one sense unique, cannot of course be valued with the same certainty as books, and it is perhaps not too much to say that no manuscript is worth more than it will sell for in the open market, nor will it sell for the same amount or near it on two or more occasions.

The highest individual amount realised at this sale was £1,750 for a later version of Wycliffe's Bible, written during the 15th century on 404 folios of vellum. In 1620 this manuscript belonged to William Davenporte, of Bramhall, in Cheshire, who wrote on a blank page: "This Booke I will (God willinge) leave for an heireloome to my right heires of Bramhall." The manuscript was, however, sold by one of these same heirs, and was the last bought by the late Earl of Ashburnham.

Other important lots comprised the following: Legenda Sanctorum, or Lyves of Seyntis, in Englysshe, 14th century, £37 (Quaritch)-Biblia Sacra, a 14th century MS., £125 (Quaritch)— a Latin Bible, dating from the 11th century, 146 (Quaritch) — Evangelia Quatuor, of the 12th century, £110 (Quaritch)—Missale ordinis Fratrum Minorum secundum consuetudinem Romane Curie, 15th century, £68 (Quaritch)-Horæ Latine, on 85 leaves, £81 (Quaritch)-Officia Liturgica, 15th century, by a Flemish artist, £70-Horæ Beatissimæ Virginis Mariæ, richly illuminated,
