Veritas afks for proofs, where proofs are fuperabundant, and puts queftions which have been often anfwered. We refer him to fome of our medical articles for the present month. We have not heard of any wrong fort of Cow-pox; but that inoculation, we prefume, may be imperfect as well as others. Dr. Binns has written to affure us that his account of the Scarlatina has never been published, except in Dr. Wil lan's lan's treatife, for which it was exprefsly drawn up. So much, therefore, as relates to those observations in our XXVIIth volume, p. 263, must be deducted from the account of ob ligations to printed works. We really think that, not only no injuftice was done to Sacrates, in the firft inftance, but that indulgence was fhown. We have, therefore, notning more to fay on the fubject. LITERARY INTELLIGENCE. Mr. Johnes, having fucceeded fo well with Froiffart, is now occupied in tranflating Joinville, and has made fome progrefs in the work. A new edition of the Dean of Weftminster's Voyage of Nearthus is in the prefs. Mr. Combe, of the British Museum, will foon publish an Appendix to his father, Dr. Combe's, valuable work, entitled, Numni veterum Populorum et Urbium qui in Mujao G. Hunter, M. D. affervantur. Mr. Park's enlarged edition of Walpole's Royal and Noble Authors, extended to five volumes octavo, will appear before Christmas. The Rev. Roger Kingdon is at prefent engaged in tranflating another part of Dr. Lefs's Gefchichte der Religion. The part on which he is now employed is the Beweils der Wahrheit der Chriftlichen Religion. The tranflation will probably come from the prefs early in the enfuing year. Mr. Boyd's tranflation of the Triumph of Petrarch, is in confiderable forwardness. New edition of Leland's Life of Philip, King of Macedon, the father of Alexander, is just ready. . It is not exactly literary intelligence, but it will be acceptable to many literary men, to inform them, that a Society for the Encouragement of Practical Chemistry has lately been planned; and that a committee of its founders has eftablished a laboratory at No. 11, Old Compton Street, Soho. T is with much pleasure we introduce our readers to a work, which forms a very important addition to the literary hiftory of the laft half-century. The writings of Dr. Beattie amply deferve the mounent here raifed to his fame by Sir William Forbes, a gentleman, whofe private character, we understand, affords a pledge for the foundnets of his principles, as well as for the fidelity with which he has executed the truft repofed in him. The bold ftand which Dr. Beattie made against the progrefs of fcepticifin, at a time when it seemed to proceed without any impediment, deferved what he received, the munificent patronage of his Sovereign, and the esteem and veneration of every fupporter of religion and morality.
