At the time of the formation of this Society, in 1825, the sale of standard, practical, evangelical works in our country was small, and their circulation quite limited. After the Society had issued about two hundred Tracts, attention was given, in 1827, to the publication of one or more volumes, as the providence of God might direct; and the way to issue the first was made clear by the donation of two hundred dollars each from four venerable men, the late Hon. Stephen Van Rensselaer, Col. Richard Varick, Col. Henry Rutgers, and Nicholas Brown, Esq., to stereotype and perpetuate Doddridge's Rise and ProgThe demand for this work, and its evident adaptation to be useful to the souls of men, led to the contribution of an equal sum to stereotype and perpetuate Baxter's Saints' Rest; then to the issuing of Pike's Persuasives to Early Piety, a duplicate cast of the stereotype plates of which was presented to the Society by an "English Bap
