THE GOSPEL

ACCORDING TO

SAINT JOHN.

CHAPTER I.

1 IN the begin'ning was the Word, and the Word was with Go'd, and the Word was' Go'd. 2 The same was in the begin'ning with Go'd. 3 A'll things were ma'de by him; and without' him was not an'y thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the li'fe was the light' of men. 5 And the light shi'neth in darkness; and the darkness comprehen'ded it not,

8

6 There was a man sent from Go'd, whose name 'was' John. 7 The sa'me came for a wit'ness, to bea'r wit'ness of the Light, that a'll 'men' through him' might belje've. He was not that Light, but was sent' to bea'r wit'ness of that Light. 9 That was the tru'e Light, which light'eth every man that com'eth in'to the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was ma'de by him, and the world knew him not. He came un'to his o'wn, and his o'wn received him not. 12 But as man'y as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of Go'd, 'e'ven' to them that belie've on his name: Which were bo'rn, not of blood', nor of the will of the flesh', nor of the will of man', but of Go'd. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt amon'g us, (and we beheld' his glo'ry, the glory as of the o'nly begot'ten of the Father,) full' of gra'ce and truth.

15 John bare wit'ness of him, and cri'ed, sa'ying, This was he' of whom I spakę, He that com'eth after me is prefer'red befo're me; for he was' befo're me. 16 And of his fulness have all we received, and gra'ce for gra'ce. 17 For the law was given by Mo'ses, 'but' gra'ce and tru'th came by Jesus Chri'st. 18 No man hath se'en Go'd at an'y time; the o'nly begotten Son', which is in the bo'som of the Father, he hath decla'red him.'

19 And this is the rec'ord of John, when the Jews sent prie'sts and Le'vites from Jeru'salem to ask' him, Whọ a'rt thou? 20 And he confess'ed, and deni'ed not; but confess'ed, I am not the Chri'st. 21 And they ask'ed him, What then?

Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not'. Art thou that prophet? And he an'swered, No. 22 Then said they un'to him, Who a'rt thou? that we may give an an'swer to them that sent us what sa'yest thou of thyself'? 23 He said, I 'am' the voice of one cry'ing in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lo'rd, as said the proph'et Esa'ias. 24 And they which were sent' were of the Pharisees. 25 And they ask'ed him, and said un'to him, Why bapti'zest thou then, if thou be not that Chri'st, nor Eli'as, ne'ither that prophet? 26 John an'swered them, sa'ying, I bapti'ze with wa'ter but there stan'deth one amon'g you, whom ye know not; 27 He it is, who, com'ing after me, is prefer'red befo're me, whose shoe's lat'chet I am not worthy to unlo'ose. 28 These things were done in Bethab'ara beyond' Jordan, where John was bapti'zing.

29 The next day John se'eth Je'sus com'ing un'to him, and sa'ith, Behold the Lamb of Go'd, which ta'keth awa'y the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, Af'ter me com'eth a man which is prefer'red befo're me; for he was' befo're me. 31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Is'rael, therefore am I come bapti'zing with water. 32 And John bare rec'ord, sa'ying, I saw the Spirit descen'ding from heaven like a do've, and it abo'de upon' him. 33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with wa'ter, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spir'it descen'ding, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Gho'st. 3 And I saw, and bare rec'ord that this is the Son of Go'd.

35 Again', the next day af'ter, John stood', and two of his disciples; 36 And look'ing upon' Je'sus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of Go'd! 37 And the two disci'ples heard him spe'ak, and they followed Je'sus. 38 Then Je'sus turned, and saw them following, and saith un'to them, What seek ye? They said un'to him, Rab'bi, (which is to say, being inter'preted, Mas'ter,) where dwell'est thou? 39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abo'de with him that day: for it was about' the tenth hour. 40 One of the two which heard John 'spe'ak,' and followed him, was An'drew, Si'mon Peter's broth'er. 41 He first fi'ndeth his o'wn broth'er Si'mon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messi'as, which is, be'ing interpreted, the Chri'st. 42 And he brought him

to Je'sus. And when Je'sus beheld him, he said, Thou art Si'mon the son of Jo'na: thou shalt be called Ce'phas, which is, by interpreta'tion, A stone.

43 The day following, Je'sus would go fo'rth in'to Galilee, and fi'ndeth Phil'ip, and saith un'to him, Follow me. Now Phil'ip was of Bethsa'ida, the city of An'drew and Pe'ter. 45 Phil'ip fi'ndeth Nathan'ael, and saith un'to him, We hạvẹ found him of whom Mo'ses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Je'sus of Nazareth, the son of Jo'seph. 46 And Nathan'ael said un'to him, Can there an'y good' thing come out of Nazareth? Phil'ip saith un'to him, Come and see. 47 Je'sus saw Nathan'ael com'ing to him, and saith of him, Behoʻld an Israelite inde'ed, in whom is no guile! 48 Nathan'ael saith un'to him, Whence kno'west thou me? Je'sus an'swered and said un'to him, Befo're that Phil'ip called thee, when thou wast un'der the fig'-tree, I saw thee. 49 Nathanael an'swered and saith un'to him, Rab'bi, thou' art the Son of Go'd; thou art the King of Israel. 50 Je'ṣus an'swered and said un'to him, Because I said un'to thee, I saw thee un'der the fig'-tree, belje'vest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. 51 And he saith un'to him, Ver'ily, verily, I say un'to you, Hereaf'ter ye shall see heaven o'pen, and the angels of Go'd as'cending and de'scending upon' the Son of man.

CHAP. II. And the third day there was a marriage in Ca'na of Galilee; and the moth'er of Je'sus was there. 2 And both Je'sus was called and his disci'ples to the marriage. 3 And when they wan'ted wi'ne, the mother of Je'sus saith unto him, They have no wi'ne. Je'ṣus saith un'to her, Wom'an, what have I to do with thee? minę hour is not yet come. His moth'er saith un'to the servants, Whatsoever he saith un'to you, do ‘it.' 6 And there were set there six wa'ter-pots of sto'ne, af'ter the man'ner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apie'ce. 7 Je'sus saith un'to them, Fill the wa'terpots with wa'ter. And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he saith un'to them, Draw out now, and bea'r un'to the governor of the feast. And they ba're it.' 9 When the ruler of the fe'ast had ta'sted the wa'ter that was made wi'ne, and knew not whence it was, (but the servants which drew' the wa'ter knew,) the governor of the feast called the bri'degroom, And saith unto him, Every mạn at the begin'ning doth set fo'rth good' wine; and whẹn mẹn

have well drunk, then that which is wors'e: 'but' thou' hast kept the good' wine until now'. 1 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Ca'na of Galilee, and man'ifested forth his glo'ry; and his disci'ples belie'ved on him.

12 After this he went down to Caper'naum, he, and his mother, and his breth'ren, and his disci'ples; and they contin'ued the're not man'y days.

13 And the Jews' pass over was at hand; and Je'sus went up to Jerusalem, 14 And found in the temple those that sold ox'en, and she'ẹp, and doves, and the cha'ngers of mon'ey sit'ting: 15 And when he had made a scourge of small co'rds, he drove them all out of the temple, and the she'ẹp, and the ox'en; and poured out the cha'ngers' mon'ey, and overthrew the tables; 16 And said un'to them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandize. 17 And his disciples remembered that it was writ'ten, The ze'al of thine house hath c'aten me up.

18 Then an'swered the Jews, and said un'to him, Whạt si'gn she'west thou un'to us, se'eing that thou do'est these things? 19 Je'sus an'swered and said un'to them, Destroy' this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. 20 Then said the Jews, Fo'rty and six years was this temple in buil'ding, and wilt thou re'ar it up in three days? 21 But he' spake of the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disci'ples remembered that he had said this un'to them; and they believed the scrip'ture, and the word which Je'sus had said.

23 Now, when he was in Jeru'salem at the pass'over, in the fe'ast-day,' man'y belie'ved in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. 24 But Jesus did not commit' himself' un'to them, because he knew a'll 'men,' And ne'eded not that an'y should tes'tify of man: for he knew what was in' mạn.

CHAP. III. There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicode'mus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 The same came to Je'sus by night, and said un'to him, Rab'bi, we know that thou art a teacher come from Go'd: for no man can do these miracles that thou' do'est, except' Go'd be with him. 3 Je'sus an'swered and said un'to him, Ver'ily, ver'ily, I say un'to thee, Except' a man be born again', he can'not see the kin'gdom of Go'd. 4 Nicode'mus saith un'to him, How can a man be born when he is o'ld? can he en'ter the sec'ond

time in'to his moth'er's wo'mb, and be born? 5 Je'ṣus an'swered, Ver'ily, ver'ily, I say un'to thee, Except' a man be bo'rn of water, and of' the Spir'it, he can'not en'ter in'to the kingdom of Go'd. 6 That which is bo'rn of the flesh is flesh; and that which is bo'rn of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said un'to thee, Ye must be bo'rn again'. The wind blo'weth where it lis'teth, and thou he'arest the sound thereof', but canst not tell whence it com'eth, and whith'er it go'eth: so is every one that is bo'rn of the Spirit. Nicode'mus an'swered and said un'to him, How can these things be? 10 Je'sus an'swered and said un'to him, Art thou a mas'ter of Israel, and kno'west not these things? 11 Ver'ily, verily, I say un'to thee, We speak that we do kno'w, and testify that we have se'en; and ye receive not our wit'ness. 12 If I have told you earth'ly things, and ye belie've not, how shall ye belie've if I tell you 'of' heav'enly things? 13 And no man hath ascen'ded up' to heaven, but he that came down' from heaven, 'e'ven' the Son of man which is in' heaven.

14 And as Mo'ses lif'ted up the ser'pent in the wilderness, e'ven so must the Son of man be lif'ted up; 15 That whosoev'er belie'veth in him should not per'ish, but have eternal life. 16 For Go'd so loved the world, that he gave his o'nly begot'ten Son, that whosoever belie'veth in him should not perish, but have everlas'ting life. 17 For Go'd sent not his Son in'to the world to condem'n the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18 He that believeth on him is not condem'ned: but he that believeth not' is condem'ned already, because he hạth not believed in the name of the o'nly begot'ten Son of Go'd. 19 And this is the condemna'tion, that light is come in'to the world, and men loved da'rkness rath'er than light, beca'use their de'eds were e'vil. 20 For every one that do'eth e'vil ha'teth the light, neither com'eth to the light, lest his de'eds should be repro'ved. 21 But he that do'eth truth com'eth to the light, that his de'eds may be madę man'ifest, that they are wrought in Go'd.

22

Af'ter these things came Je'sus and his disci'ples in'to the land of Jude'a; and the're he tar'ried with them, and baptized.

23 And John also was bapti'zing at E'non, ne'ar to Sa'lim, because there was much wa'ter there; and they came, and were baptized: 24 For John was not yet cast' in'to pris'on.
