CHURCH AND CONGREGATION,

Who statedly worship THE ONLY WISE GOD OUR SAVIOUR, in the Meeting-House, corner of BennetStreet, in Middle-Street, Boston.

BRETHREN,

THE Committee you have honoured, by entrusling to them the care of felecting and arranging the Hymns, &c. for a new Book, having, according to their beft ability, performed the duty they were called to, beg leave to prefent the refult of their labours unto you, encouraging hope that their arrangements will meet your approbation.

They confider it a fubject of painful regret, that they were not at liberty to infert thofe original Hymns contained in the former collection; they believe with you, that they are worthy a place in any felection; but they have endeavoured to fupply their place from fundry authors, who have spoken as well as they were able in the praife of our adorable Saviour.

We have omitted fome Hymns, which we admire on many accounts, but think them not fo well adapted to the celebrating the praises of the Redeemer, as fome we have inferted in their place. We have thought it not quite fo confiftent with that part of chriftian worship, facred to the praife of the world's Saviour, to make ourfelves the fubject of our fongs, by finging our own praises, or prayers. We have, in this felection, attended to the direction of our Saviour's Spirit by the apostle James, where he faith, Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him fing pfalms.
