Un Campo presso Fores.

RE DUNCANO, MALCOLMO, DONALBANO, LENOX, Séguito, s'incontrano

in un Soldato ferito.

Chi è quest' uom, brutto di sangue? A quanto
Veggiamo, ei ne può dar della rivolta

L'ultime nuove.

Egli è quel fante istesso,
Che coll' ardito suo valor m' ha salvo

Da prigionia. Salute o buon amico!
Quel che sai della pugna al Re fa noto,
E come la lasciasti.

Incerta stava;

Simili a due già lassi lottatori,

Che s'abbrancan l'un l' altro, e van fiaccando

Le forze estreme. Il crudel Magdonvaldo

Dall' isole traeva occidentali

Gran rinforzo di Cherni e Galloglassi;

E propizia alla lotta maladetta,

Già, fortuna, parea farsi la druda

Di quel ribelle. Eppur fu tutto invano;
Poichè sdegnando la fortuna, il prode
Macbetto, figlio del Valor, chè dritto

SCENE I.

An open Place.

Three WITCHES.-Thunder and Lightning.

1st WITCH. When shall we three meet again, In thunder, lightning, or in rain?

2nd WITCH. When the hurlyburly's done, When the battle's lost and won;

3rd WITCH. That will be ere set of sun.

1st WITCH. Where the place?

2nd WITCH.

Upon the heath.

3rd WITCH. There to meet with Macbeth.

1st WITCH. I come, Graymalkin!

2nd WITCH. Рaddock calls:-Anon.—

3rd WITCH. Fair is foul, and foul is fair;

1st WITCH. Hover through the fog and filthy air.

SCENE II.

Camp near Fores.

Alarum within.

(They vanish.)

Enter KING DUNCAN, MALCOLM, DONALBAIN, LENOX, with Attendants,

DUN.

meeting a bleeding Soldier.

What bloody man is that? He can report,

As seemeth by his plight, of the revolt

The newest state.

This is the sergeant,
Who, like a good and hardy soldier, fought
'Gainst my captivity:-Hail, brave friend!
Say to the king the knowledge of the broil,
As thou didst leave it.

Doubtfully it stood,
As two spent swimmers, that do cling together
And choke their art. The merciless Macdonwald
From the western isles

Of Kernes and Gallowglasses is supplied;

And fortune on his damnèd quarrel smiling,
Show'd like a rebel's whore. But all's too weak;
For brave Macbeth (well he deserves that name),
Disdaining fortune, with his brandish'd steel,
Which smok'd with bloody execution,
Like valour's minion,
