And then if any man shall say unto you, Lo here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not:

For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.

Wherefore, if they shall say unto you, Behold he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

SECTION XXI.

Christ compares the suddenness of his Second Advent, to the
coming of the Deluge.

MATT. xxiv. 36, to the end. MARK Xiii. 32, to the end.
LUKE XXI. 34-37.

But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, Mark xiii. 32no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the

Son, but the Father;

but my Father only 19.

Matt. xxiv.36.

But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the Matt.xxiv.37. coming of the Son of man be.

P For as in the days that were before the flood, Matt. xxiv.38. they were eating and drinking, marrying and giv

ing in marriage, until the day that Noe entered
into the ark,

And knew not until the flood came, and took Matt.xxiv.39.
them all away; so shall also the coming of the
Son of man be.

Then shall two be in the field; the one shall Matt.xxiv.40. be taken, and the other left.

Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the Matt.xxiv.41. one shall be taken, and the other left.

19 Even upon the Unitarian hypothesis, our Lord was the greatest of Prophets; and as Daniel had been able to fix the time of the first advent, it must naturally excite surprise, that the Messiah did not know the time of his own second advent. The best mode of resolving the difficulty appears to me to be that, which makes oidev equivalent to the causative of y; in which case the verse may be thus rendered, "But the hour of the second advent, neither man, nor angels, nor I the Messiah, have made known to the world: my Father only shall reveal it, by the suddenness of that day of judgment, in which He has appointed the Son, to manifest himself in the glory of the Father."

Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not Jerusalem. when the time is.

Watch, therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

But know this, that if the good man of the I Thess. v. 2. house had known in what watch the thief would Rev. xvi. 15. come 20, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.

Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour

as ye think not, the Son of man cometh.

Luke xxi. 34.

Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch, And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and

20 In this and the two following parables, our Saviour insists upon his unexpected and sudden judgment. It is here described as a thief ready to steal into the house, if not constantly watched. This comparison is frequent; Luke xii. 39. 2 Pet. iii. 10. Rev. iii. 3. and xvi. 15. As these parables were at the time exclusively addressed to the disciples, they must be supposed to refer primarily to their ministry. They are, however, equally applicable to all Christians"What I say unto you I say unto all, Watch;" Mark xiii. 35-37. Luke xii. 41.
