on all that are fallen from Thee, and raise them; on all that stand with Thee, and confirm them. Have mercy on all that groan under their sins, and ease them; on all that bless themselves, and go on in their wickedness, and curb and stop them. O blessed Jesus, Who didst shed Thy Blood for our souls to save them, shed Thy Holy Spirit on all and heal them, for Thy infinite mercy's sake. Amen.

For the Despondent.

HOLY Jesu, we fall down before Thee, and beseech Thee to have mercy upon Thine afflicted servant. Lift from him, if it might be, the heavy burden of his affliction. Thou wast "despised and rejected of men, a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief." Thou hast "borne our griefs and carried our sorrows." "We have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities." Thou knowest every pain and pang that rends the heart. Thou knowest the heaviness which boweth down Thy servant's soul. O thou Whose soul was 66 exceeding sorrowful, even unto death," look in mercy upon his great sorrow. Pardon in him all faithless thoughts and fears, and dispel them by Thy grace. Lift from above his head the dark cloud of despair, and let the bright sunshine of Thy love shine round about him. Teach him to trust Thy word, and to believe in Thy promises; and let him not be cast down overmuch by the anguish of his own weak and sinful heart. Teach him to look from his own wounds to Thy blessed Cross, and may he find healing, and comfort, and peace, as and when Thou seest fit. May he remember that it

is not his own feelings, but Thy promises, which are the pledge of everlasting salvation. And if he may not know here joy and peace in believing, may he nevertheless enter at length into the joy of his Lord and the perfect peace of Paradise, there to dwell with Thee, Who livest and reignest, with the Father and Holy Spirit, one God evermore. Amen.

For the Thoughtless.

GOD and Father of all, Who delightest in the happiness of Thy creatures, send down Thy Holy Spirit upon all those who are drawn away by the pleasures of youth, the opportunities of wealth, or the excitement of sin, to forget Thee, and neglect their necessary preparation for eternity. Enlighten them, defend them, calm them, control them, make them to see the vanity of earthly pleasures, and the satisfaction of the joy of Thy holy service, and so perfect their natural energies by the power of Thy supernatural love that they, now learning to rejoice in the hope of Thy glory, may hereafter see Thee face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Sceptics.

LORD God of truth, I cry to Thee in behalf of all who are hesitating and wavering in their belief, especially . . . I implore Thy mercy on all who have madly cast off their faith.

Do Thou, I humbly beseech Thee, convince them by Thy Holy Spirit, and disperse the

miserable doubts that come between them and Thy awful truth.

O Lord, Who alone knowest the hearts of men, be pleased to touch each one as Thou only canst do it. Clear away the pride and the evil influences which have poisoned their spirits. Send to each the medicine which is most appropriate to his case. Make them humble; make them ashamed of their ignorance and their sins; make their eyes to see Thee, that they may abhor themselves, and repent in dust and ashes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Penitents.

LMIGHTY and most merciful God, Who

ALMIGHTY the death of a sinner, but that all should come to repentance and live; look mercifully upon those who willingly return to Thy shelter, desiring no longer to continue in those ways which have been their ruin. Deliver them from the bondage of evil passions, wherein they are still held, although now endeavouring to escape. Reveal within them the law of Thy Holy Spirit, that they may be set free from the law of sin and death. Sanctify the outward discipline of their rule to the quieting of all fleshly impulses, and empower the ordinances of Thy Church to be the means of cleansing their hearts from all evil recollections and impure desires. Bring them to humble obedience, and sincere reformation of life. Perfect within them, by the gift of perseverance, the work which Thou hast so graciously begun. Watch over those who have now returned to the necessary labour of the world. Lead them onward from grace to grace, that they may not only have a name to live, by

the respectability of their outward conduct, but a holy consciousness of restoration to Thy favour, and a blessed participation of the life everlasting; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Intemperate Persons.

GOD, Who hast declared that they who

defile and abuse their bodies shall not inherit the kingdom, we beseech Thee to have mercy upon drunkards, and all other intemperate persons, and especially upon . . . Rouse them, O Lord, and rescue them from the sinful habits which have the mastery over them. Open their eyes to see their desperate danger. Call them to escape for their lives while there is yet time. Lay hold of their hands while they linger in self-indulgence and fleshly fulness, and bring them to glorify Thee in all godly abstinence and self-denial; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Soldiers and Sailors in Time of War.

GOD the Lord of Hosts, we humbly com, mend to Thy especial care our relations, friends, and countrymen now serving in our forces by sea and land.

We heartily pray Thee that Thy purposes may be accomplished in this war with as little suffering as possible to Thy servants upon whom its hardships and perils fall. Be Thou with them, O Lord our God, to help them, and fight our battles. Preserve them from disease, and from the sword of the enemy; and grant that under all circumstances they may put their

whole trust in Thee, and so may boldly and patiently do their duty in that work to which it hath pleased Thee to call them.

We beseech Thee also to help and comfort those who are near and dear to them, lighten their griefs and anxieties, and grant them patience and resignation to Thy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For a Blind Person.

JESU, Light of the world, and Sun of Righteousness; look down in mercy upon this Thy servant in his blindness. Thou camest to give sight to the blind. Give him, I pray Thee, spiritual sight. Shed the rays of Thy blessed truth upon his soul. Enlighten his mind to discern clearly the things which belong unto his peace. Though the bodily eye be in darkness, may the eye of the soul be full of light. May he have faith to look, not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. Keep him from the darkness of sin and ignorance, from all darkness of thought and deed. May the light of the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ shine into his soul. May he walk as a child of the light. And when the night of this world is ended, may he awake up in Thy likeness, and seeing Thee face to face, enter the light of everlasting day. Hear me, O Saviour, Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

For Mourners.
