For Absent Friends.

LMIGHTY God, Who art the Protector of

[ocr errors]

All that trust in Thee, Who art present in every place to hear the prayers of such as fear Thee and call upon Thy Name, in firm belief of this comfortable truth, I cheerfully commit my friends, especially. to Thy favour and care. Pardon their sins, and preserve them from all dangers to body and soul, that they may be blameless in Thy sight; and grant that we may meet happily again in Thy love, if not in the flesh, then at the foot of Thy throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Departed Friends.

LORD God of the spirits of all flesh and

art ever to be glorified in the quick and in the dead, Who hast knit all Thy members together with bands which death cannot loosen ; I entreat Thee on behalf of all those departed in the true faith of Thy holy Name, and especially for... For Thy dear Son's sake, our Saviour and Redeemer, give them pardon of all sins and transgressions which they committed in their mortal flesh. Enter not into judgment with them, for in Thy sight shall no man living be justified. Spare them by Thy mercy, reckon them among the number of Thine elect, write their names in the Book of Life, grant rest to their souls, and make them worthy of the felicity of Paradise. Give them the joy of Thy Presence in the habitations of light and gladness, where the souls of the faithful, delivered from the burden of the flesh, are in joy and

felicity with Thee, waiting for their perfect consummation and bliss; for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.

O

For an Invalid.

LORD God, Thou makest all things work together for good, and Thou hast mercifully been pleased to withdraw this Thy servant from many amusements and occupations which he formerly enjoyed. Make him thankful that Thou hast thus taken him from things which perhaps filled too much of his heart. Grant that he may now place his whole happiness in Thy promises, and in the hope of rest and communion with Thee, and thus may be finally secured to Thee, and be made a partaker of Thy joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

and sickness; look mercifully upon Thy servants whom Thou hast afflicted in the body for the wellbeing of the soul. Bless the means that are used for their recovery, and restore them to their former health and strength, if it be Thy gracious will.

But above all things, I beseech Thee to grant that, through Thy Fatherly visitation, they may attain to a deeper repentance and a more earnest faith, may grow in patience and in meek sub

mission to Thy will. And if Thou art pleased to take them hence, so fit and prepare them by Thy grace, that they may depart in charity with man, at peace with Thee, and with a blessed hope of everlasting life. Grant this, O Lord, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Mediator and Redeemer. Amen.

No. 2.

HOLY Father, Who chasteneth us for our good, that we may be partakers of Thy holiness; have mercy on this Thy servant, and bless to him such chastisement as in Thy love Thou art pleased to lay upon him. May it yield the peaceable fruits of righteousness in him. May it be the means, under Thy blessing, of stirring in his heart a true repentance for all sin. Especially, O Lord, may it wean him from that sin which hath most easily beset him, so that it may no more get the dominion over him. So shall he confess that Thou of very faithfulness hast caused him to be troubled, and evermore give thanks to Thee for Thy mercies; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

No. 3.

EMEMBER not, Lord, our offences, nor the offences of our forefathers, neither take Thou vengeance of our sins. O God, Who keepest Thy servants with tender affection, incline Thine ear to my supplications. Hear me when I pray to Thee for him that is sick.

Have pity on him, O Lord, according to Thy mercy, and deliver him from all evil, from the power of Satan, from unholy thoughts, from pain of body and mind, from Thy dreadful wrath.

Grant unto him a humble and contrite heart, a genuine and full repentance.

Take from him all murmuring and impatience.

Pardon, wash out, obliterate all his sins and offences. Make him to accept his sickness humbly and gratefully, as a gracious call from Thee, Who wouldst not that any should perish. Enable him to resign himself entirely to Thy blessed will. Give him grace to praise Thee in illness, thankfully to call to mind the happiness of former health, and patiently to submit to all his pains and weariness. Give him the will to offer up his sufferings to be united with those of Thy dear Son, Who suffered for his sake. O Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world, be Thou an Advocate for him with the Father.

O Refuge of the distressed, refresh him that is weary and heavy laden. Be mindful of this poor member of Thy Body, and let not Thy precious Blood be shed in vain for him, but thoroughly sanctify him by Thy Holy Spirit.

Have mercy on his soul, and save it.

Call him now to Thyself, stir up his heart to greater sorrow for sin, to thorough change of inclination towards it, to earnest and zealous desire of pleasing and obeying Thee in everything. And receive him into the number of the glorified, to praise and serve Thee eternally. Lastly, O Lord, let not the world, the flesh, and the devil come back upon him in the intervals of prayer, so as to drive out good thoughts and holy wishes and desires. But quicken them in him! Make them to grow and flourish in him without interruption or hindrance; not only in the time of solemn devotion, but at all times. May the well of living water be so filled with the

Spirit that it may overflow in him through all the hours of the day, and yet more in the sleeplessness and restlessness of the night, to Thy honour and glory, Who, with the Father and the Holy Ghost, etc.

No. 4.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, in Whose hands are the issues of life, and Whose infinite wisdom ordereth all things for the best to them that love Thee; look down with Fatherly eye on this one whom Thou hast touched with Thine hand. Support him with Thy grace, strengthen his faith, increase his hope, and perfect his charity. And if it shall please Thee to call him to Thyself, carry him safely through the valley of the shadow of death, through which our loving Saviour hath passed before us. And finally receive him into those heavenly mansions which the same Lord is gone to prepare; where no fear shall trouble him, no pain distress him, no anxiety disturb him, no infirmity afflict him; where perfect security, pure delight, and unceasing joy await all who truly love Thee.

Amen.
