at all times, and to abhor everything which is offensive in Thine eyes.

O Lord Jesus, my Master, my Saviour, I desire to be conformed unto Thee. Make me humble, diligent, steadfast, and persevering. Keep me from being frivolous, vain, ill-tempered, or idle. Give me zeal and discretion, self-denial and cheerfulness, gentleness and earnestness. Fill me with holy thoughts. Endue me with calmness and patience. Give me a single eye to Thy service. In all that I have to do let me manifest Thy Life living in me. Help me to set aside entirely my own satisfaction, and while acting with courtesy and consideration towards others, never to forget that I am Thy servant. Cause me to remember this day the hours of prayer, and enable me to lift up my heart to Thee in the midst of business or recreation.

O Lord, I humbly commit unto Thee those for whom I am bound to pray, those I love, those with whom I am associated, or with whom I have to do to-day. Bless my family (my colleagues, my servants, and dependants), and all my friends. Grant unto them whatever good I ask for myself, and supply whatever I forget as Thou knowest to be expedient for them.' Protect me, O Lord, this day from all evil and mischief. Into Thy hands I commend myself wholly. Keep me in perfect peace, make me to depend entirely on Thee. If it seem good unto Thee to send affliction of body or mind, or to try me with disappointment or failure, or if my way lead this day through the gate of death, I resign myself absolutely to Thy Fatherly and most loving Providence. I still cling humbly to Thee, and to Thy love. O heavenly Father,. I offer my strength to Thee this day. Prosper

my work, and bring me in peace to the evening. Brighten this day, O Lord, with Thy favour. Be Thou above me to support me, before me to guide me, round about me to protect me, within me to strengthen me, after me to forgive me. Now and always. Amen. I will go forth in the strength of the Lord God.

No. 2.

LESSED art Thou, O Lord, our God, the God of our fathers, Who turnest the shadow of death into the morning, and renewest the face of the earth; Who hast lightened mine eyes, that I slept not in death; Who hast delivered me from terrors of the night, from the pestilence that walketh in darkness; Who makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice. Blessed art Thou, for I have laid me down and slept, and have risen up again; it is Thou, Lord, Who makest me dwell in safety. I awoke and beheld, and my sleep

was sweet unto me.

O Lord, blot out as a mist mine iniquities. Scatter my sins as a morning cloud. Grant that I may become a child of the light, and of the day, that I may walk soberly, chastely, and honestly, as in the day. Vouchsafe to keep me this day without sin; uphold me when I am falling, and lift me up when I am down; grant that I may never harden my heart by provoking Thee, by tempting Thee; nor let me be deceived by any sin. Preserve this day from any evil of mine, and me from the evil of this day. Let not my days be consumed in vanity, nor my years in trouble. Let one day utter speech unto another; let this day add something in knowledge or in practice to yesterday.

Oh, let me hear Thy loving-kindness betimes in the morning, for in Thee is my trust; show Thou me the way that I should walk in, for I lift up my soul unto Thee.

Deliver me, O Lord, from mine enemies, for I flee unto Thee to hide me. Teach me to do the thing that pleaseth Thee, for Thou art my God. Let Thy loving Spirit lead me forth into the land of uprightness. Quicken me, O Lord, for Thy Name's sake; and for Thy righteousness' sake bring my soul out of trouble.

Remove from my mind thoughts that are without understanding. Inspire good thoughts into me, even such as shall be well-pleasing unto Thee. Turn away mine eyes, lest they behold vanity. Hedge in mine ears, that they listen not to foolish discourses. Waken them to hear in the morning, and open them to the doctrine of Thy Word. Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth, and keep the door of my lips; let my speech be seasoned with salt, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Let nothing that I do be a grief or offence of heart to me. But let my doings be such for which Thou mayest remember me for good; and do Thou spare me according to the greatness of Thy mercy.

Into Thy hands I commend my spirit, soul, and body. Thou hast created, redeemed, regenerated them, O Lord, thou God of Truth. And with myself I commend unto Thee all those whom I love, and all that belong unto me. Thou, O Lord, hast graciously given them unto Thy servant. Preserve us, O Lord, from all evil; keep us from falling, and present us faultless before the presence of Thy glory at that day. Preserve my going out and my coming in, from this time forth for evermore. Prosper, I beseech Thee, Thy servant this day, and grant me favour

in the sight of all whom I shall meet. O God, make speed to save me. O Lord, make haste to help me.

Oh, turn Thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; give Thy strength unto Thy servant, and help the son of Thine handmaid. Show some

token upon me for good, that I be not put to shame in the sight of them that hate me, because Thou, Lord, hast holpen me, and comforted

me.

O God, I beseech Thee-Guard my heartSustain my body-Exalt my senses-Direct my goings-Regulate my conversation-Bless my undertakings-Fulfil my petitions-Inspire me with holy thoughts-Fill me with purity-Pardon what is past-Rectify the present-Order the future.

God be merciful unto me, and bless me, and show me the light of His countenance, and be merciful unto me. Amen.

No. I.

HOLY, blessed Lord God, God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Ghost, Who dwellest in light eternal and unapproachable, I Thy wearied servant again humble myself before Thee.

I glorify Thee for Thy Fatherly love and goodness to me this day. I humbly thank Thee for sparing me from evil I have provoked; for shielding me from accident, and infection, and countless dangers; for guarding me in various temptations; for guiding me in difficulties; for rescuing me and others from the consequences of my follies; for keeping me back from outrageous crimes, and from sins which readily beset me; for turning away much mischief which my negligence, or carelessness, or indolence might have caused. (Especially I thank Thee for . . .)

I desire to confess to Thee, O Lord, whatever evil I have done this day in thought, word, and deed; whatever duty I have left undone, whatever I have done defectively or badly towards Thee and towards men. Help me, O Lord, to discover my faults. Let the light of Thy holiness now search out my heart'

O Lord Jesus Christ, I desire of Thee true contrition. Perfect in me an abiding repentance. Pardon all for the sake of Thy own bitter
