Meditation.

Prayer before Meditation.

LORD, I humbly beg Thy help now to shut out the world, to close my heart against all that can interrupt my communion with Thee. Subdue all riotous, and unruly, and wandering thoughts in me. Let Thy Holy Spirit stir up the depths of my soul, and saturate them with holy thoughts. Quicken my affections; exalt my understanding of spiritual things; sharpen my judgment in the earnest desire to mortify my own will and to do Thine; and direct my meditation to personal and practical improvement, so that I may now advance a step in the spiritual life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

"Open Thou mine eyes that I may see the wondrous things of Thy law. I am a stranger upon earth, O hide not Thy commandments from me."

"Quicken Thou me in Thy way. Quicken me in Thy righteousness."

Ejaculations.

For Occasional Use.

LESSED art Thou, O Lord; teach me Thy

BL

statutes.

O Lord, open Thou my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Thy praise.

The night cometh when no man can work. Make me diligent while it is day.

Lord, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief. We are Thy servants, O Lord, and Thy people, whom Thou hast redeemed by Thy great power, and by Thy strong hand. Prosper Thy servant this day.

Remember the word unto Thy servant upon which Thou hast caused me to hope.

Incline my heart unto Thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.

Turn away my reproach which I fear.

I will keep Thy statutes; oh, forsake me not utterly.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ, according as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy, and without blame before Him in love. Grant unto me, O Lord Jesus, to be strengthened with might by Thy Spirit in the inner man. O Christ, I pray that Thou mayest dwell in my heart by faith.

Make me to bear and have patience, and to

labour for Thy Name's sake, and not to faint.

I desire to hear Thy voice, and to open the door. Do Thou, O Lord, come in to me!

Thou knowest what things I have need of before I ask Thee.

I will not serve God and Mammon.

Grant unto me first the kingdom of God, and Thy righteousness.

O Lord, I ask; O Lord, I seek; O Lord, I knock. Give me the bread of life.

Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.

Make me to deny myself, and take up my cross and follow Thee.

I wait for the Lord; my soul doth wait; in Thy word do I hope.

In the mount the Lord shall be seen.

Say in a word, and Thy servant shall be healed. I will make a covenant with my eyes.

Lord, remember me when Thou comest in Thy kingdom.

Speak, Lord, for Thy servant heareth.

Be Thou exalted, O God, above the heavens, and Thy glory above all the earth.

Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him. God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid.

May I work out my salvation in fear and trembling.

O Lord, direct my heart into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.

It is mine own infirinity, but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most Highest.

I will rejoice in giving praise for the operations of Thy hands.

Grant to me, gracious Lord, a pure intention of

my heart, and a steadfast regard to Thy glory in all my actions.

Lord, I am not mine, but Thine. Claim me as Thy right, keep me as Thy charge, and love me as Thy child. Fight for me when I am assaulted, heal me when I am wounded, revive me when I am destroyed.

O Lord my God, I beseech Thee to give me patience in troubles, humility in prosperity, constancy in temptations.

Grant me sorrow for my sins, thankfulness for Thy benefits, fear of Thy judgments, love of Thy mercies, and mindfulness of Thy Presence for evermore.

Lord, let me be joyful for nothing but that which pleaseth Thee, nor sorrowful for anything but that which doth displease Thee. Let my labour be a delight which is for Thee, and let rest be a weariness except in Thee. Lord, make me humble to my superiors and friendly to my equals, ready to please all and loth to offend any, loving to my friends and charitable to my enemies.

Self-Examination.

No. I.

GOD, show me myself! myself in Thy light! ward shows and pretexts! I have made of myself!

Let me see

bared of all outLet me see what Let me not shrink

from this humiliation, and may it humiliate me so that I never forget it! For Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

No. 2.

ALMIGHTY God, to Whom every recess of

our hearts and souls is so utterly known that the burning light of Thy Spirit can pass through the very midst of that sacrifice of my whole self which I now offer to Thee; I pray Thee to help me to search it out in every separate part and piece, and to deplore and bewail every blemish and offensiveness therein, that it may be wholly cleansed, and made perfect through the merits of Him Who offered Himself acceptably unto Thee, Jesus Christ our Lord. O Lord, I desire not to spare myself, but so to judge myself that I be not judged of Thee. I pray Thee now to quicken my memory, to strip off my excuses, to give me the measure of Thy holiness wherewith to compare my own uncleanness. And then, O Lord, for the sake of Thy dear Son, forgive me! Wash me thoroughly from my wickedness, and cleanse me from my sin. Amen.
