In terms of the Trust Deed, in virtue of which the Trustees act, the Competitors for these Prizes must be Students in the University of Edinburgh, who, at the commencement of the present Session (1867-8), were not more than of three years' standing, from the time of their first Matriculation. Each Essay intended for competition must be distinguished by a Motto prefixed to it, and be accompanied with a Sealed Envelope, having this Motto inscribed on it, and having enclosed the Name and Address of the Author of the Essay; and these must be forwarded, free of expense, to the Subscriber of this Advertisement, on or before the Ist day of September next. The quantity of matter in each Essay must not exceed what may be read in the course of two hours; and the handwriting must be distinctly legible. On the 29th day of October next, the Trustees, as the appointed Judges in the Competition, will award the Prizes to the Students whose Essays they deem the most deserving of them respectively, and will announce the result to the public by advertisement in the Newspapers ; but in case they shall be of opinion that none of the Essays submitted for competition possesses sufficient merit to deserve the prizes, they, in terms of the Trust Deed, reserve liberty to decline an award to any of the Competitors, and to offer the Prizes for future competition on a different topic.
