The Epifle. S. Jude 1.

Ude the fervant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are fanctified by God the Father, and preferved in Jefus Christ, and called: Mercy unto you, and peace, and love be multiplied. Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common falvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you, that ye fhould earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the faints. For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation; ungodly men turning the grace of our God into lafcivioufnefs, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jefus Chrift. I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew his, how that the Lord having faved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward deftroyed them that believed not. And the angels which kept not their firft eftate, but left their own ha bitation, he hath referved in everlasting chains under darkness, untothe judgment of the great day. Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them, in like manner giving themfelves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, fuffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Likewise alfo thefe filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.

For there are certain Men crept in, &c. These were the Followers of Simon Magus and the Nicolaitans. Of the latter of which we are told that they allowed themselves in the practice of the most abominable lewdness: and of the former that he declared himfelf to be God the Father to the Samaritans, and God the Son to the Jews thus denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jefus Chrift.

If the World hate you, ye know,' &c. The con

Becaufe, if he chearfully fo endured fuch forrows for our fake, who was without blemish; how. much reafon have we to bear patiently the chaftifeents of Heaven when our fins have deferved far more than God is pleafed to lay upon us.

ye were of the world, the world would love his own: you. If but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the

word that I faid unto you, The fervant is not greater than the Jord: if they have perfecuted me, they will also perfecute you; if they have kept my faying, they will keep yours alfo. But all thefe things will they do unto you for my Names fake, because they know not him that fent me. If I had not come and spoken unto them they had not had fin: but now they have no cloke for their fin. He that hateth me, hateth my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had fin; but now have they both feen, and hated both me and my Father. But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause. But when the Comforter is come, whom I will fend unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall teftify of me. And ye alfo fhall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
