THE following Discourses were delivered at intervals, during a period extending over two years and a half, in the ordinary course of pulpit instruction. Half of them were written before any idea occurred to the author of publishing them in a volume. The matter was then distributed with reference to a systematic and comprehensive treatment of the whole subject. The author makes this statement in order to explain what he is aware will be open to criticism, the repetition of the same arguments and illustrations, and what may seem to some the prolixity of the book. In revising the Discourses for publication, the author found it impossible to mutilate them to that extent which would have been necessary to avoid the charge of repetition, without essentially disturbing their logical |
