It is the fpirit that quickneth, "the flesh profiteth nothing: the words "that I fpake unto you, they are fpirit, "and they are life. But there are "fome of you that believe not. Mar. vii. fus] the Pharifees, and certain of the Scribes which came from Jerufalem, and when they faw fome of his difciples eat bread with defiled (that is to fay with unwafhen) hands, they found fault. For the Pharifees and all 3. the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. And when they come from the market except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups and pots, brazen Mat. xv. veffels and of tables. Then the Pharifees and Scribes asked him, Why walk not thy difciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwafhen bands? He anfwered and faid 6. There is nothing from without a man, that entring into him can de (a) Corban, Corban fignifies a Gift; and is used here for a man's Eftate, devoted to God by his gift. By which they thought themselves excufed from relieving their Parents if they had need, pretending their Eftates were Gods, and they could not difpofe of it to any one elfe. |
