[The number of plates is given in the catalogue as 118, but the usual list consists of fleuron on title and 103 plates, containing 126 subjects by Colemans, after Rigaud, S. [Only 200 large paper copies were printed of Houbraken and Vertue's "Heads of Illustrious Persons." The number of portraits given above is correct, but the work is usually found in 2 vol., and was so issued, the first appearing in 1743 with 80 plates, and the second in 1751 with 28. series of portraits of members of the Kit-Cat Club, 48 in number, is of much greater importance, and justifies the high price realised for the lot as a whole. Good sets are worth from £20 to £25, and more when on large paper.ED.]

[Though not specifically mentioned in the above description, there is also a portrait of Le Brun by Edelinck, after de Largillière. There are only 10 leaves of text. The large paper copies have 51 plates in proof, the one entitled "La Franche-Comté réunie à la France" not existing in proof state. Further, the number of plates in the large paper copies does not tally with those in copies on the ordinary paper, the former having 3 medals, while the latter contains only 2 medals on a leaf, and the 2 plates of the ceilings are not folded in the large paper issue.
