4377 Shakespeare (Mr. William). Comedies, Histories and Tragedies, published according to the true Original Copies, first edition (the title, verses, seven preliminary and two last leaves supplied from the reprint, and a small portion of the corners of five leaves supplied by MS.), morocco extra, gilt edges, Printed by Isaac Jaggard and Edward Blount, 1623, folio (210) Tregaskis, £170

[It may be mentioned that on the 29th March last, at the sale of Mr. Daly's library at New York, a copy of the first folio brought $5,400, or about £1,080. This, was stated at the time to be the highest amount hitherto realised for any copy of this scarce book-an obvious error, for in July, 1899, £1,700 was obtained for an annotated copy consigned from abroad. (See BOOK-PRICES CURRENT, vol. xiii., No. 6733.) Only about half-a-dozen perfect copies of the first folio are known to exist, all the others being manifestly incomplete, or else having been repaired or made perfect by additions from other copies. The first appearance at auction of a first folio Shakespeare took place in May, 1687, when a small collection of books belonging to the Coventry family was sold at a dwelling-house in the Haymarket. The price realised on

that occasion is not stated, but it must have been quite trifling, for in 1781 a perfect copy sold for no more than £2 4s. 6d. In 1800 the value had risen to £15 15s., and in 1812 to 100, at which price the Roxburghe folio was disposed of.-ED.] 4378 Shakespeare (Mr. William). Comedies, Histories and Tragedies.
