Vale Press Publications-a Complete Set.

[NOTE.-References to the "Vale Press" will be found in the Christmas number of Bookselling, 1896; the Athenæum of July 23rd, 1898 (in a review of Vaughan's Poems); and in the Saturday Review of November 11th, 1899. Books issued from this Press have been rising in value for some time, and as this is the first occasion on which a complete set, to date, has been sold by auction, a full report, irrespective of the amount realised in any particular instance, is given for purposes of comparison later on. In many cases the published price has already been doubled at least, e. gr., in the cases of "The Book of Ruth, The Book of Esther" (post No. 3618), which was issued at 15s.; Shakespeare's "Passionate Pilgrim" (post No. 3619), published at 10s. 6d.; Vaughan's "Sacred Poems" (post No. 3626), published at 16s.; the "Rowley Poems" of Thomas Chatterton (post No. 3632), published at 10s.; and many more. The similarity between the Vale books and those from the Kelmscott Press is, at first sight, most marked. In both cases 15th century models have been largely copied, but the Kelmscott books are essentially specimens of handicraft as distinguished from machine work, which enters very largely into the productions of books coming from the Vale Press. In addition to the articles above mentioned, reference may be made to Ricketts and Pissaro's "De la Typographie et de l'Harmonie de la page imprimée" (post No. 3631), and "A Defence of the Revival of Printing" (post No. 3640).-ED.]
