readily to the truth, when amongst conflicting sects of Christians, it is so hard to see what truth is, and in which sect it may be found? Who, as St. Paul has asked in a different matter, "if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle ?" (1 Cor. 14. 8.) If the apostles had suffered preachers to go forth, saying some, I am of Paul, and some, I of Apollos, (see 1 Cor. 3. 4,) instead of teaching all one Lord, one faith, one baptism, (see Eph. 4. 5,) can we think that they would have overturned the established superstition, and have won to the name of Christ, as we know they did, the most large, and powerful, and united empire, which has existed since the world began?

No, my brethren, if we would convert the heathen from idolatry, we ought to be agreed as to what we would convert them to. We ought to preach abroad one religion only. And for this end we ought first to be all of one mind at home. Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace. Let us speak the

truth in love. Let us in no one word or act of ours, either countenance disunion by indifference, or widen it by animosity and strife. "Sirs, ye are brethren." (Acts 7. 26.) What a forcible exhortation was this of Moses to the children of Israel, when they fought with one another in the presence of their oppressors! "Sirs, ye are brethren," what a profitable appeal ought this to be to Christians, contending as too commonly we do with one another, in the face of an unbelieving world! 66 Sirs, ye are brethren;" what a delightful testimony would this be for the heathen to hear of us; what an argument for them to become brethren unto us, if they were to see that we are as brethren with each other!

O ye

who would evangelize the world, who feel sad at heart to think, how few amongst all redeemed by Christ have yet learnt to glorify his name, and who earnestly and honestly desire to do something for the cause of Him, who has done so much for you, remember, that for this end it is absolutely needful, not only that

ye have salt in yourselves, but also that ye have peace one with another. (See Mark 9. 50.) Follow therefore after the things that make for peace. Judge not, condemn not, offend not your brethren. Stickle not for trifles. Take all pains in your power to be right yourselves; but be not eager to prove that others are wrong. And instead of studying how to narrow the gates of heaven: throw them open as wide as possible to all mankind.

With this exhortation we conclude one portion of the subject now before us; designing in the following discourse, to insist on two other most effectual methods, to be adopted by every one who earnestly desires to fulfil the precept of the text, to promote the preaching of the Gospel unto all mankind. Only we would now add, to you who hear, "Freely ye have received, freely give." (Matt. 10. 18.) Amongst the many murmurs of the unthankful, let me be allowed to say, that there is within reach of the inhabitants of this land a larger share of blessings, temporal and spiritual, than is to be met.

with in any country throughout the earth. Be thankful then to God, who has given you so many blessings richly to enjoy. Prove your thankfulness by imparting of the same, as largely as you can, to those who dwell in foreign lands, and who depend on your bounty for that most excellent of all gifts we can bestow; the ministration of the Gospel of Christ.

HOW TO PROPAGATE THE GOSPEL ABROAD.

MARK 16. 15.

"Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature."

In order to succeed in propagating the Gospel abroad, it is necessary to watch that the faith is duly held, and adorned with holiness of life, by those who go forth from Christian countries, and form colonies in heathen lands. It is no less needful to carry on a war of aggression, against the enemy of souls, in the strong hold of heathen idolatry; by sending preachers of the word of salvation into the midst of those who never heard the name of Christ, and who without this
