Advocating a careful survey of the harbors of Alaska with a wire-drag to locate pinnacle rocks. Recently several vessels have struck such rocks and two ships were lost.

HARRIMAN ALASKA SERIES. In 1899 Mr. E. H. Harriman, the railroad magnate, financed an expedition to Alaska. Having chartered a steamship for a summer cruise he invited, among others, 25 scientists to be his guests and gave them every opportunity for observation and collection. The results of their work were published in 11 volumes, edited by C. Hart Merriam of the Biological Survey, and printed by Doubleday, Page & Co. At Mr. Harriman's death the volumes already published were turned over to the Smithsonian Institution and the series was continued by it. This set is not a Government document, because it was not paid for by the Government. The volumes may be bought from the Smithsonian Institution.
