The editor of "Lowndes" knew of its existence, but could only cite the example now in the Lenox Library, New York. To mention a few of the more famous copies of this edition which have occurred for sale, the Daniel, Tite, Orford (sold for £540), Ives and Daly copies, all contained the Allot title-page. The same remark applies to each of the three copies in the British Museum and also to the Huth copy. In addition to all the irregularities of pagination mentioned in Lowndes (excepting that page 49 in Henry IV. is correctly paged), there occur in the present copy two errors quite unknown to the editor of Lowndes. In King Lear, page 321 is misprinted 323 and page 324 is misprinted 322. Inserted is an autograph letter, dated December 12, 1842, from Dr. Bandinel (Bodley's librarian) in reference to editions of King Lear. [An excessively rare tract of seven leaves; as an uncut copy it is possibly unique. Inserted is a letter from Payne Collier to George Daniel, dated June 28, 1831. Collier writes: "I thank you for your invitation and will avail myself of it without fail. I promise myself great pleasure in looking over your treasures, qualified, though it may be, by some tincture of envy. However, I will make up my mind to be as little spiteful as possible." Trotter is probably meant for Thurloe; Desborough and Hewson appear by name, the former as a hawker, and the second as a cobbler; while Mrs. Cromwell is introduced with a wash-tub, exchanging Billingsgate with a rabble of boys. . . It was first given in February, 1659-60, and had considerable influence in preparing the political transition."-D. N. B.]
