[The first of these two "Indulgences" is printed on a leaf of vellum (measuring nearly 8 x 5 inches) in black letter (probably by Pynson), and consists of twelve lines, with an ornamental initial K. A Letter to the People of Scotland, on the Present State of the Nation, by James Boswell, Esq., 1784-A Letter to the People of Scotland, on the Alarming Attempt to infringe the Articles of the Union, and introduce a most Pernicious Innovation, by diminishing the number of the Lords of Session, by James Boswell, Esq., 1785The British Constitution of Government, compared with that of a Democratic Republic, by Sir William Young, Bart., F.R.S. and A.S.S., author of The History of the Republic of Athens, 1793-The Present State of the Manners, Arts and Politics of France and Italy, in a series of Poetical Epistles from Paris, Rome and Naples in 1792 and 1793, addressed to Robert Jephson, Esq. by J. Courtney, M.P., 1794-A Biographical Sketch of Dr. Samuel Johnson, by Thomas Tyers, Esq. (annotated by the author), 1785, in 1 vol., from the library of James Boswell, his crest

stamped on the side and a list of contents written on the fly-leaf in his autograph, old half calf, 1784, etc., 8vo. (727) Maberley, £7 10s.

[Tyers' Sketch of Johnson is a presentation copy to Boswell. It is, apparently, a proof copy, corrected and annotated throughout by Tyers himself. In one place he has inserted, in manuscript, Goldsmith's comparison between Johnson and the bear. On the fly-leaf, a note from Tyers to Boswell says, “Pray Mr. Boswell don't lend, lose or give away this biographical morsel.”—Catalogue.] 2983 Johnson. Plinius Cæcilius Secundus (C.) Epistolæ et Panegyricus cum variis Lectionibus & Annotationibus, original calf, Oxonii, 1703, 8vo. (728) Maberley, £7 15s.

[Dr. Johnson's copy of Pliny, with three of his autograph signatures, viz., on the title-page, front cover and end cover. The later signature carries the date March 30, 1726. Notes in Johnson's autograph are on the back of the title and at pages 292, 293 and 357. Johnson had left Stourbridge School in 1725, and went to Oxford in 1728. This volume contains what is possibly the earliest signature of Johnson extant. Catalogue.]

2986 [Lamb (Charles).] The King and Queen of Hearts with the Rogueries of the/ Knave/ Who stole the Queen's Pies/ Illustrated in Fifteen Elegant Engravings, in the original paper wrappers, unique, the only copy known to exist, For J. Godwin, 1809 (736) Sabin, £222

[Although dated 1809, the plates are dated 1805, and it is probable that 1809 is a misprint for 1806. Lamb, writing to Wordsworth, February 1, 1806, adds in a postscript respecting this book, "of which I, being the author, beg Mr. Johnny Wordsworth's acceptance and opinion." The date of 1805 would place it as the first of Lamb's juvenile writings. It has been stated that the pictures in "The King and Queen of Hearts" were drawn by Mulready.— Catalogue. The pamphlet was sold with others at Mr. Tuer's sale in July, 1900, when the "parcel" realised but 15s.-ED.]
