A Lover's Moods: A Sonnet-Sequence.

By BERTRAM DOBELL.

The Sonnets composing the above sequence were written at various times during the last four years of the author's life. They are intended to represent the incidents of a love-passion, not literally or realistically, but from a poetical or idealistic standpoint, and are without doubt the late Bertram Dobell's greatest poetical achievement. Ten of the Sonnets were printed in The Poetry Review in March, 1914, and attracted a good deal of attention. In the same year the Rowfant Club, of Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A., printed the complete sequence in a private edition for circulation among its members.

A Century of Sonnets.

By BERTRAM DOBELL.

There is a mellowness and quiet dignity, a spiritual sincerity and courage about these sonnets which win the reader's cordial sympathy. We feel ourselves in the presence of one who has truly lived and loved, and sought and suffered, who has tested many things in life and in life's philosophies; and who, though often baffled and perplexed, has never lost faith in himself nor in man, nor doubted the ultimate good." - Yorkshire Daily Observer.

LRS.S., 21 pp., 1794-98, addressed to Lord Melville, with reference to Indian affairs and to Tippoo Sultan's movements, £1 10s "There is every prospect of lasting tranquillity in this Country. The Captain of the Dutch Squadron at the Cape precludes a probability of our being materially disturbed by our European Enemies; whilst, at the same time, it deprives Tippoo of all hope of co-operation from that quarter, should he really have meditated Hostilities against us, of which I am doubt ful. The Return of Nasna to Poona, and the prospect of Baji Rou, the lawful Heir, being placed on the Musnud, promise a speedy settlement of the Government," &c. 2 AFRICA.

8 BECKFORD (William, d. 1799, Historian) An Extremely Long and Interesting L.s. to Thomas Woodward, written from Jamaica and relating to Beckford's farm and properties, 64 pp., folio, Sept. 27th, 1776, 188

[ocr errors]

Besides going fully into the state of his own property, the writer refers at length to the political and commercial conditions in America, Canada and Jamaica. Referring to Jamaica.he says, As to this country, so little pains have been taken to preserve it from the incursions of the Americans, that they make capture within sight of our coasts, and seem to hold the naval strength we have at present for the defence of the Island in the utmost contempt. The ministry must have made a very erroneous provision for the safety of the colonies, or their intentions must have been grossly misconstructed by those who have been entrusted with the conduct of them, when an armament that is almost sufficient to bleach the seas from England to America should not be able to protect the trade of the former from a trifling number of cruising vessels belonging to the latter, which intimidate our ships, and throw disgrace on the British name," &c.
