Ursprünglich wurde das BCP bereits im Jahre 1549 durch den berühmten englischen Reformator und Erzbischof Thomas Cranmer herausgegeben. Unser Allgemeines Gebetbuch ist biblisch, denn etwa 85% seines Inhalts wurde direkt der Bibel entnommen. Es ist auch mehr als nur ein altes Dokument des sechzehnten Jahrhunderts. Zum Zusammenstellen dieses liturgischen Meisterwerks hatte Cranmer die mittelalterliche Messe bearbeitet. Diese ist selbst verwurzelt in den alten Liturgien der Kirche von Ephesus (Apostel Johannes) des 1. Jahrhunderts und im Sarum Ritus des 10. Jahrhunderts. Obwohl diese Ordnung die Entstehung des Allgemeinen Gebetbuchs beeinflusst hat, ergeben sich im Vergleich mehr Unterschiede als Gemeinsamkeiten. Cranmer hatte den Sarum Usus formell und inhaltlich stark kritisiert. Unser deutsches Allgemeines Gebetbuch (revidiert) steht jedoch der ursprünglichen Version von 1549 sowie der 1662 Ausgabe viel näher.
Das 1662 BCP ist auch heute noch das offizielle Gebetbuch der Kirche von England und wird von der Mehrheit der 80 Millionen Anglikaner weltweit in der jeweiligen Landessprache benutzt. Deshalb ist auch unser Gottesdienst Teil einer bewährten weltweiten Gebets-Tradition.
Die beiden zentralen Gottesdienste des Allgemeinen Gebetbuchs sind das Heilige Abendmahl sowie das Morgen- und Abendgebet (oder Morgen- und Abendlob). Sie werden gewöhnlich in anglikanischen Gemeinden wöchentlich angeboten. In großen Gemeinden findet sonntags zuerst das Morgengebet (Morgenlob) statt. Danach trifft man sich zu Kaffee oder zur Christenlehre / Sonntagschule. Dann folgt der Abendmahlsgottesdienst.
