Clafs

'Clafs III.-For carriages let to hire. For carriages hired for any period of time less than one year, or kept to be let out to hire, or to carry paffengers:

For every fuch carriage kept for the purpofe of being let to hire, with horfes to be used therewith, for any time not exceeding twenty-eight days, fo that the ftamp office duty, on horfes let to hire, fhall be paid, and whereon the name and abode of the perfon licenfed fhall be painted, if fuch carriage hall have four wheels 81. 85. And if Tuch carriage hall have lefs than four wheels, the fums mentioned in schedule (D, No. 2), according to the number of horses used therewith.

And for every coach, diligence, caravan, or chaife, with four wheels or more, or other carriage with four wheels or more, employed as a public ftage coach or carriage for conveying paffengers for hire, and which fhall be entered as fuch, with the commiffioners of stamp duties 81. 8s. Which laft duties fhall be paid by the perfons keeping the fame.

For every carriage kept for the purpose of being let to hire for lefs than one year, and in fuch manner that the ftamp office duty fhall not by law be payable on fuch letting, by any perfon licenfed, or by any coachmaker, or other person, if such carriage fhall have four wheels, 1ol.

To be paid by the person keeping the

fame.

But if a due return thereof shall not be made by the hirer, the progreffive duty in clafs I. fhall be chargeable.

Clafs IV. Taxed carts.

For every carriage with less than four wheels, to be drawn by one horfe and no more, which shall be built wholly of wood

and iron, without any covering other than a tilted covering, and without any lining or fprings, whether made of iron, wood, leather, or other materials, and with a fixed feat, without flings or braces, and without any ornament whatever, other than paint of a dark colour, and which shall have the words, "a taxed cart," and the owner's chriftian and furname, and abode, painted on a black ground in white letters, or on a white ground in black letters, on the outfide of the back pannel or back part, in words at full length, each of the letters being one inch in length, and the price of which (repairs excepted) shall not have exceeded, or the value thereof fhall not at any time exceed 121. kept by any perfon for his own ufe, and not for hire, l. 4s.

Save and except always all carriages built and conftructed as aforesaid, belonging to any perfon who shall be liable to be affeffed to the duties in respect of a four

wheeled carriage, or who shall be liable to be affeffed to the duties on male fervants, in respect of two, which perfons shall all be charged, although built as aforesaid according to Clafs 2.

Clafs 5--The duties payable by coach

makers, and on carriages made or fold.

By every person who fhall carry on the trade of a coachmaker, or maker of any carriages chargeable with duty, in that part of Great Britain aforefaid, the annual duty of 5s.

By every fuch coachmaker, for every carriage with four wheels, which he shall make, build, or construct for fale, 11.

And for every fuch carriage with two wheels 108.

Clafs 6. The duties payable by perfons felling any carriages by auction or on commiffion.

By every person who fhall fell any car. riage chargeable with duty by this act, by way of auction, or on commiffion, in that part of Great Britain aforefaid, the annual duty of 58.

By every fuch perfon, for every such carriage with four wheels, which he shall fell by auction, or on commiffion, 11.

And for every fuch carriage with two wheels, which he fhall fell by auction or on commiffion, 108.

pation of the perfon to whom fuch horfe thall belong, although fuch horfe fhall be used for riding, on the occafions hereinafter mentioned; viz. when returning from any place to which load fhall any have been carried, or in going to any place from whence any load fhall be to be brought back, or on account of having been used for riding to procure medical affiftance, or to or from market, or to or from any place of public worship, ör to or from any election of members of parliament, or any courts of juftice, or any meeting of the commiffioners of taxes.

2. Any pron occupying a farm as tenant at rack rent, which fhall be lefs than 70l. a year, and making a livelihood folely thereby; or any perion occupying any eftate on any other tenure flely, or fuch estate, together with a farm at rack rent, the value of which in the whole shall be less than equivalent to a farm at the rack rent of 70l. a-year (reckoning every estate occupied by the owner, or on any te ure other than that at rack rent, as equivalent to double the amount of the like farm at rack rent), and making a livelihood folely thereby, and using occafionally for the purpofe of riding any horle, which fhall be bona fide kept and ufually employed for husbandry.

3. Any perfon occupying a farm, and making a livelihood folely thereby, or any perfon carrying on a trade, and making a livelihood folely thereby; or making a livelihood by fuch occupation and trade jointly; or any ecclefiaftical perfon not poffeffed of an annual income of 100l. whether arifing from ecclefiaftical preferment or otherwife, for one horfe, ufed only for the purpose of drawing any taxed cart. Clafs 2. The duties payable on horfes let to hire.

For every horfe let to hire for the purpofe of riding, or of drawing any carriage for any time lefs than one year, in any, manner, so that the ftamp office duty fhall not be payable, 21.

HORSES AND MULES.

Clafs 1. The duties payable for all horfes, mares, and geldings, not charged as afore faid, and alfo on mules.

For every horse, mare, or gelding, not chargeable with any fuch duty, and for every mule, except in the cafes hereinafter mentioned, wherein other duties are made payable, 12s. 6d.

Clafs 2.-The duties payable on husbandry horfes, in the cafes after-mentioned.

Any perfon occupying a farm at rack and making a livelihood folely thereby, or rent, which fhall be less than 20l. a year, occupying any eftate on any other tenure than at rack rent folely, or fuch other eftate, together with a farm at rack rent, the value of which in the whole shall be lefs than equivalent to a farm at the rack rent of 20l. a year(reckoning the value of every eftate occupied by the owner, or on any tenure other than as tenant at rack of the like farm at rack rent), and rent, as equivalent to double the amount making a livelihood folely thereby by fuch his own eftate; or by fuch estate and farm jointly, or principally thereby, and likewife a profit by any trade or employment, and keeping not more than two horfes, the purpofe of fuch occupation, fhall be mares, geldings, or mules, bona fide for charged for each the fum of 2s. 6d.

Any person occupying in like manner a farm at rack rent in Wales or Scotland, the rent of which fhall be lefs than 1ol.

DOGS.

fetting dog, fpaniel, lurcher, or terrier, For every greyhound, hound, pointer, and for every dog of whatever defcription, where any perfon fhall keep two or more, either for his own ufe, or the use of any other perfon, 10s.

For every dog not being a greyhound, hound, fetting dog, spaniel, luicher, or ter rier, kept by any perfon having one such dog and no more, whether kept for his own ufe, or the ufe of any other perfon, 6s.

Perfons in refpect of the whole number of hounds, who fhall compound for the fame, in any year within thirty days after the 5th of April, and pay thirty pounds to fuch collector, are exempted.

In any other part of England, or in Wales, or the town of Berwick-uponTweed, the annual duty of 10l.

HAIR POWDER.

By every person who shall have used or worn any hair powder within the period limited by this act, the annual fum of 11. 18.

"Unmarried daughters fhall not be chargeable, provided the parent fhall have more than two, and shall pay for two.”

ARMORIAL BEARINGS.

By every fuch perfon chargeable any duty made payable by this act, for any coach or other carriage, the annual fum of 21. 28.

By every fuch perfon not chargeable for any fuch coach or other carriage, but who fhall be chargeable to any of the duties on inhabited houfes, or to the duties on houfes, windows, or lights, the annual fum of

By every fuch perfon not chargeable for any fuch coach or other carriage, not being chargeable to the faid duties on inhabited houses, or to the duties on houses, windows, or lights, the annual fum of Jös. 6d.

"The faid duties to be paid by every perfon having used, or caufed to be used any armorial bearing or enfign, by whatever name the fame is called, within the year preceding, and to extend to every perfon who within the faid period fhall have been poffeffed of, or fhall have kept or had any coach or other carriage, or any feal, plate, or other article, on which any armorial bearing or enfign fhall have been painted, engraved, marked, or affixed; and whether fuch armorial bearing fhall be registered in the college of arms or not."

GENERAL EXEMPTIONS IN RESPECT OF

OFFICIAL PERSONS USUALLY RESI

DENT IN IRELAND.

"All perfons, members of either houfe of the parliament of the united kingdom, whether on the part of Ireland, or for any place in Great-Britain, and who shall have ordinarily refided in Ireland previous to the commencement of the feffion in which hey shall ferve; and all perfons ordina.

rily refident in Ireland, and holding offices or public employments in Ireland, and refiding in Great Britain, with the approbation, or by the order of the lord lieutenant or other chief governor of Ireland, or of his chief fecretary, and which fhall be certified under the hand of the lord lieutenant, chief governor, or his chief fecretary, to be therein refident for the purposes of affifting in the execution of public bufinefs, shall be wholly discharged and exempted from the duties in the schedules (C), (D), (E), and (G), provided that this exemption fhall not extend to any perfon ordinarily refident in Ireland as aforefaid, being a member of either house of parliament, who fhall refide in Great Britain longer than during the feffion, and forty days before and forty days after each feffion, nor to any article on which a duty is by this act made payable, which shall be kept, employed, or used by fuch perfon in Great Britain, during the refidence of, fuch perfon in Ireland: also, this exemp tion fhall not extend to any perfon ordinarily refident in Ireland, holding an office or public employment in Ireland, unless the approbation in writing, or such order of the lord-lieutenant, or other chief governor of Ireland, or of his chief fecretary, and a defcription of the place of abode in Great Britain of the perfons holding fuch offices or employments, be delivered into the office for the affairs of taxes in Somerfet-place, within twenty days after the 5th of April, 1804, with respect to persons then in Great Britain, or within thirty days after the arrival in Great Britain of fuch perfons who fhall hereafter arrive: also, no perfon fhall, for the purpofes of claiming this exemption, be deemed to be ordinarily refident in Ireland, unless he shall refide therein during fuch portion of the year as is not covered by the privilege herein provided: and for the better afcertaining the fact of fuch refidence, every perfon claiming the benefit of this exemption, shall verify the fame upon oath (if required) before the commiffioners acting in the district."
