were taken on the field of battle. On the 14th, Bourquien, and four other French officers furrendered themselves prifoners of war. On the 16th, General Lake paid a firft vifit to the Emperor Shah Aulum. On the 4th of October, General Lake appeared before the fortrefs of Agra. The approaches to the fortrefs were defended by fome battallions of the enemy, which, after a gallant refiftance agreed to furrender, and were received as prifoners of war, in the British camp, on the 13th. Agra was furrendered, by capitulation, on the night of the 17th. The remainder of the French army, about 19,000 men with seventy-four pieces of artillery, retreated before the British till they were overtaken at LafwaIn a defperate action, the enemy loft all their guns: 2000 of them were made prifoners and the rest are believed to have perished on the field of battle. ree. The province of Berndeland, was, in the mean time, fuccefsfully occupied by Lieu tenant-colonel Powell, with the affistance of Rajah Himmut Bahadur, an officer under the Peishwah. In confequence of thefe fucceffes, Daow lut Rao Scindia fent to negotiate peace on fuch terms as fhould be acceptable to the English. The Governor-general has fent dispatches to communicate the fortunes of the war to the Company's Government in England. The thanks of the two Houfes of Parliament, and of the Courts of Direcors and Proprietors of the India Company, have been voted to him and to the Comman der in Chief; to Majors-generals Wellesley and St. John; to the officers, and to the whole army. The entire deftruction of the French intereft in India is believed to have been effected. The Emperor Shah Aulum and the Peifhwah are expected to be restored to authority and poffeffions in which they fhall prove bulwarks to the British power. The former, 39 for the most part exhibits characteristics of active inflammation; the latter, thofe of pofitive debility or decay. The one of course 6 requires fedatives and the various means of evacuation, the other the application, both externally and internally, of exciting and invigorating remedies. Cafes of ery2 fipelas, though fometimes regarded as fur2 gical, fall more properly within the department of the physician. The fact is, that cutaneous affections in general ought to be regarded not as difeafes in themfelves, but merely as indices of a diseased ftate of the conftitution, which is fre quently restored to its natural health and vigour by encouraging, rather than checking or retarding, the progrefs of a fuperfi cial eruption. It is likewife worthy of remark, that the fame appearance on the furface of the fkin fometimes arifes from one, and fometimes from an oppofite morbid condition of the fyitem. 12 24 36 25 The various modifications of Eryfipe las have occurred with peculiar frequency during the last month. Concerning the nature of this disease there has exifted a confiderable diversity of opinion; but this probably arifes from an actual difference in the nature of the disease itself occurring at different periods, and in different fituations. Between the eryfipelas of Edinburgh, for instance, which the Reporter The ignorance of the medical attend ant, ant, with regard to this matter, cannot fail to be of ferious, and perhaps fatal, injury to his patient. Since the publication of the last Report, the writer was called, in the middle of the night, to a lady who was feized fuddenly with the fymptoms of an apoplectic paroxyfm. Though there was in her habit an evident predifpofition to the difeale, the immediate caufe feemed to have been the having eaten the evening before a very hearty fupper; a meal in which, by medical prefeription, the fcarcely ever had indulged. It is often r.entioned in the public papers, as remarkable, that a perfon has been found dead in his bed after having partaken, with a more than ufual appetite, his evening repaft; a circumftance which, fo far from making the event curious, fufficiently accounts for its premature occurrence. Emetics are often given, but are never proper in a fudden attack of this difeafe, as they inevitably produce a violent determination to the head, at the moment when its veffels are already dangerously diftended; even bleed. ing is fometimes of dubious utility. The partial accumulation more rarely arifes from a fuperabundance of blood than from a want of power in the veffels to diftribute it regularly and impartially through the trunk and all the extremities of the frame. In many cafes, therefore, we ought to have recourse to stimulation rather than to evacuation. Inftances of this difeafe occur where brandy would cure, and bleeding infalli bly deftroy. When it arifes, as it often does, from a burden on the ftomach, or retention of matter in the inteftinal canal, the fymptoms are more fafely and as effectually relieved by the adminiftration of a glyfter, or other modes of gentle purga tion, than by thofe remedies which act more immediately and violently upon the ftomach. . the diaphragm, and thus contracts the thorax, and prevents the free exercise of the pulmonary organs. If it were an idiopathic disease of the lungs it would have been chronic, and without intermif fion, whereas it occurs only after intervals of different duration, and in general at periods when the ftomach had been too copioufly replenished. As it generally occurred in the evening, the patient fancied that it was produced by the evening air, but, in fact, it arofe merely from the circumftance of the evening being after his dinner, the only meal which he relished, and after which he was in the habit of indulging in liberal and fometimes ine, briating potations. In two inftances of intermittent fever, which have of late occurred within the province of the Dispensary, opium in lieu of bark has been made ufe of with decided efficacy and advantage. The employment, however, in ague of this inestimable drug is not absolutely a novel practice. What at the prefent time furprizes us as difcoveries in medicine, will, upon enquiry, be found in more inftances than one to have been familiar to the practitioners of former periods. Important improvement in this region of phyfical fcience is perhaps more likely to arife from a diligent refearch into what has been already done, than by the utmost and most fuccessful exercife of modern imagination or ingenuity. In a melancholy cafe, where there was no chance of life, the Reporter fcrupled not, at the request of the patient, to declare the exact nature of his fituation. The fear of death, no doubt in many cafes, accelerates the event; but this circumftance, although it ought to regulate the time and modify the manner in which the truth fhould be told, cannot justify in any inftance a direct violation of veracity, That principle may be compared to the principle of gravity; the latter fometimes may kill, and frequently occafions im. portant mifchief: but unlefs we felt an entire reliance upon the invariable action of that principle, it would be impoffible for us to reafon with certainty, or to ftir a ftep in life, without unceafing anxiety and alarm. Another cafe in the private practice of the Reporter has recently occurred, which, by the patient himself and former medical attendants, was confidered as hydrothorax, or what is more commonly called water in the cheft; but, after due examination, and reflecting at leifure on the nature of the tymptoms, there appears every reafon to believe that it is not a difeafe of the lungs themselves, but of the ftomach, which, unnaturally diitended by a habit.
