The Dream of Eve. Lycidas.—H Fuzeli R. A pinxit. Lewis, aquatint. fculpt.

Thefe pictures formed a part of the Milton Gallery; and of the Milton Gallery, confidered as the production of one man, it was not eafy to peak in higher terms than it deferved. It was the production of a mind fraught with peculiar energy, of a man who was perfectly acquainted with the anatomy of the human figure, but who, in his zeal to mark his anatomical knowledge, and difplay the energy of his mind, fometimes foared into the regions of abfurdity. To copy his ftyle demands a portion of his feeling, and when an artist, neither gifted with his fpirit, nor qualified to draw correctly, attempts to transfer his figures from the canvas to the copper; he is in fome danger of rendering what was character in the picture, caricature in the print; of out-Heroding Herod! and rendering that which was high art in the original, ridiculous in the copy: the picture of Lycidas was a chatte and beautiful performance; we are forry to fay, almost every thing which gave value to the painting is loft in the engraving. The Dream of Eve is not in a better ftyle; neither drawing nor effect seem to have been attempted-in truth, if they were, they are not attained. The manner of engraving is extremely fingular.

Mr. Ackerman has just published a pair of prints from defigns by Mr. Weftall; under the' firft, which is entitled The Birth of Shakespeare, are the following appropriate lines, which were written by a contemporary poet:

Triumph, my Britain! thou haft one to fhew, To whom all fcenes of Europe homage owe. He was not of an age, but for all time; And all the Mufes ftill were in their prime, When like Apollo he came forth to warm Our ears, or like a Mercury to charm. Nature herfelf was proud of his defigns, And joy'd to wear the drefling of his lines." BEN. JONSON. The companion print is entitled The Birth of Otway. The first is engraved

had frequent occafion to speak as a very promifing, and improving young artist; and the second by Agar, whofe profel

fional talents are too well known to renhere. With refpect to the defigns, Mr. der it neceffary to recapitulate them Weftall has ranged through all the regions of Tafte, and been claffed as one of the priests of her temple; and in these two prints he has given us two interefting and engaging female figures, and two beautiful children. The little Shakespeare, holding a lyre in his right hand, and a laurel crown in his left, is characteristic; and the Otway is infantine and natural. It brings to our recollection the unfortu nate fate of the poet, who is faid to have died prematurely at 34 years of age. As to the fubjects, they are allegorical; and allegory is a mutual compact between the artift and fpectator, where one agrees to receive in a certain character a figure which preceding painters have agreed to baptize by a certain name for time immemorial. With this regard, a figure reclined on the banks of a river, &c. &c. is received as the river itself; and thus, thefe figures must be confidered as the river Avon, on the banks of which we know one of the poets was born; and the fame river, it has been faid, was the birthplace of the other.

In our Retro pect for January, we mentioned a book of Military Evolutions;· another work engraved for the fame publifher, which is now completed, and unites with much fpirit and originality of conception a number of interefting fubjects. It comprizes the various modes of fighting, as the attack, retreat, &c. &c. in various parts of Europe, from the following very animated defigns, fome of which were formerly published feparately, but are now combined in one work, price feven guineas.

The defigns were made by a fon of Geffner, the German poet, and their general characteristic is fpirit. They are printed in a rich brown colour, and have a good effect; and in the prefent, rage for military affairs are likely to be very popular.
